What I'm really getting out of my higher education

Posted Wednesday, January 23, 2008, at 11:58 AM

¡Hola! (Hello!) Welcome to my first blog. Before I get too carried away let me properly introduce myself. I am Elise and I work at the Nevada Daily Mail as a graphic designer. I'm currently working and attending college. Yes, my mother is very proud of me. As a forewarning I have a tendency to get off topic a little bit but I will do my best to stay concentrated for you dear readers. Anyway, as some people might say, on to the meat and potatoes of this thing (I really have no idea who these "some people" are, since I have personally never actually heard this form of expression, but I am sure they exist).

For the longest time when I was a kid, I was absolutely 100% positive about what I wanted to do in life. My dreams however were shattered when I found out I was born completely mortal and would never actually gain the superpowers I had always craved. All those dreams of flying through the air like Superman, reading minds and controlling physical matter like Jean Grey, and forming a super human team to battle evil would, alas, never happen. I then wondered around life not really having any direction or really putting any real thought into what I wanted my future to really be. It wasn't until my senior year in high school that my English teacher really gave me any direction. She pushed me to sign up for scholarships and get interested in continuing my education. So in short, I did (much to my mother's excitement). I actually won a scholarship and was given a Pell Grant. I picked a college that seemed to me a very smart choice and I have stuck with it ever since. To be truly honest my biggest motivator to "stick with it" is that I'd have to probably file a restraining order on my own mother to keep her from strangling me if I didn't.

It has been truly interesting to see what education is like after high school. The thing I enjoy most about it is probably the professors. Each one has a different quirk that makes them slightly more interesting then the last. My favorite teacher has to be my former Speech professor who is now teaching my Intro to Theater class. She's about as nerdy as you can get and shares a lot of common interests with me and my friend who is also taking the class. The conversations we have after class or during class breaks could easily be rated a 12 on the nerd scale that only ranges from 1 to 10. Another one of my teachers has a slight stuttering problem. He is a very interesting person who is full of knowledge and ideas. However it is slightly distracting when he starts to stutter every time he wants to combine sentences . I do try to keep the mentality of Demetri Martin anytime he uses one of his famous conjunction words. In one of Demetri Martin's stand-up acts he says "I try not to think of a stutter as a speech impediment. To me, that's like starting off certain words with a drum roll". Then there was another teacher of mine who spent about a good ten minutes explaining to us younger generation what "shacking up" was. For those of you who have no clue as I did, it means moving in together before marriage.

I have heard that my college professors have nothing on the Rolla professors. I've heard stories of an Asian professor who talks like William Shatner and Arnold Schwarzenegger mixed together. This in itself almost makes me want to transfer to Rolla, but as the famous infomercials say "but wait, there's more!". I have also heard of a European teacher who basically enjoys blowing up anything and everything and likes to talk about odd topics. These are just the tip of the iceberg. Keep in mind, this is most likely exaggerated confessions of a close friend of mine.

Now it is time that I wrap this up and say my good-byes. I have kept you long enough so ¡Adios! (Good-Bye). Enjoy your day.

Mom and Tabitha, I hope this entry has made both of you very proud.

Of course I am proud of you kiddo! To see you graduate from College will be what PK would call a "Mountain Top Moment". Keep that communication going with your profs and you will get there!

Oh, and BTW...you are right about the restraining order too :-)

Love - Yo Momma

Oh BTW I'll keep that in mind.

Hey there Elise! I know I dont know you but I am in college as well. My family have been super excited since i have been in college and to be graduating in May is a big accomplishment for me. I have an instructor as well that has a stuttering problem but he is a great instructor. When first read this I thought to myself "Is this about how much debit you can occur while your in college?" To my suprise it was not!So good luck on your career with the paper and college! Keep up the work for your mom and you to be proud of!

Sincerely;

Another college student

Elise Phillips' response:
First off congratulations on graduating soon! It must be really exciting to finally see what all that hard work and determination have brought you. Isn't it funny that all the really good professors have some sort of quirk that makes them stand out? Yes, I could have talked about debt but that to me is a given. Everyone goes in debt for college, unless you're really lucky, so I wanted to mix it up a little bit. Also, thank you. It's good to know I have others out there rooting for me other than my mom.

Shouldn't the nerd scale be cranked up to 11? Cause then while everyone else is at 10 all around they got nowhere else to go, but not you. Were do you go? up to eleven!

Elise Phillips' response:
But why not just make 10 louder?

But this would go up to 11

Elise Phillips' response:
11 is just the new 10

No, its one higher.

First off, let me apologize for taking so long to respond to your comment. Secondly, I think I know who you're talking about, but I won't tell him if you won't.

I am happy to hear (or read in this case) about what you are learning in college... But i can't help but wonder if you are learning your course subjects. Haha, as you well know it is in my job description to bring out the best in you. At least I know your learning, some, spanish.
