Facebook Family

Posted Wednesday, August 5, 2009, at 11:08 AM

I'm not a huge social networking person. I have a Myspace, a Facebook, a Twitter, and countless others that I hardly ever use with the exception of Twitter. If I hate them so much then why do I have all these accounts? Well, in short I'm not immune to peer pressure. I originally got a Facebook so I could talk to my brother and my boyfriend without having to log onto my MSN Messanger. Eventually we all found alternate ways to communicate and I stopped logging in. To be painfully honest it didn't bother me at all that I stopped using it. After awhile the applications got boring and I was starting to get annoyed at all the random people asking to be my friend that I've never met. So I shook off the bonds that was Facebook and moved on. I saw other sites and I was enjoying the break up, that is until my father decided to get a Facebook.

In an act that proves even adults give into peer pressure from time to time, my father signed up for Facebook. At first he insisted he only used it to talk to his friends and we all believed him. This, of course, was the same man who kept telling all of us that we were silly for using such a stupid website. He soon lost his credibility when he started creating the rest of the family Facebook websites against their will. After my entire family was then signed up to the site they dropped polite hints that I should log on more. Being the nice person I am I gave in and started logging in more.

After a few days it was becoming apparent that I was going to run into a whole bunch of new problems. My parents started using these applications that allow you to send your friends things. It's a nice way to show people that you're thinking of them, however, I'm just not sure how to respond. Do I send them back? Do I have to send one for each they sent me? Another issue is this family application we use. Basically it's a little program that allows all our family to join and we can update our whole family on what we're up to, organize events, etc. My problem with this is that my family always sends me reminders to update what I'm doing. I would gladly do so, but I update my main page on that every time I log in and my Twitter is full of my day to day shenanigans. After I update those two things, I really don't want to update a third. I'm seriously half tempted to just update with links to my Twitter, but I'm sure my family would just see that as lazy.

My final issue is that I have had to be careful about what I post up on Facebook. Don't get me wrong, I am no where close to being a wild youth, so there are no pictures of the awesome party I had the other night and no racist or hurtful comments on my site. I do, however, have lots of little buttons loudly stating how awesome some of my favorite things are in a somewhat colorful way. As funny as I find them it's probably not something that would make a mother proud. Not only that but almost every time I update my site it sends a notification to all my friends. The last thing I need is my parents logging in and seeing that I have downloaded a "science is (expletive) sweet!" button and suggest that all my friends do so as well.

As much as I dislike facebook I think it might be time to log in more and make an effort. I'll just keep thinking that it could be worse, Dad could have joined Myspace.

I certainly enjoyed your thoughts here. I agree with your accessment of the need to blend in. I for one, have tried these social websites with the exception of MySpace but, this seems to be the 'norm' nowadays.

My thoughts on the 'norm' is that it sometimes not the best, and do not be afraid to NOT be the norm

Thanks Chris, this definitely makes me feel a lot better about it all.

Hey I like that your pictures match here and on Twitter! You are right about the apps on Facebook, they can get tiring but more of my peeps are on that one so there I go.

Elise Phillips' response:
Well they are the most recent pictures of me, which is sad because they're about a year old. I probably should take newer ones and update them all! Just do what I do Mom, just pretend like you didn't see them! :P
