Not even the most die-hard Royals fan expected this kind of hot start from one of the worst teams over the last four years in modern baseball history. Most fans, myself included, thought the club was trapped in an endless spiral of futility. That was until the Royals won two series against the highest-paid teams in baseball and started the year four games over .500 at 6-2.

The question on everybody's mind around here who isn't a Cardinals fan is, "how are the Royals doing it?" I'll venture a guess: luck. Kansas City had the unenviable task of opening the season with a three-game series at Detroit against a team the "experts" think is the best team in baseball. Something wasn't right with that Tigers team. Ever since losing to the Royals on opening day in extra innings Detroit has been one of the worst teams in baseball. Name me a team that couldn't beat them when Kansas City caught them. The Tigers are 1-7. That doesn't mean they're a bad team, it means they're playing badly and the Royals were hot. That's all.

Kansas City then lost its series to Minnesota and came home to take two from the New York Yankees sans Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada. Things have simply gone the Royals way.

I don't want to sound like I think the 6-2 record is the product of dumb luck. Kansas City's pitching rotation has been nails. Greinke went 8 innings last night without allowing a Yankee base runner to touch third base. Royals starters have given up a total of 17 runs over 8 games and the pen hasn't blown a save yet. They haven't even allowed a run.

Add to that the offensive production of baby Royals Alex Gordon and Billy Butler and you've got a young team on the upswing, but not without problems. The Royals are sill offensively challenged. The Royals, on paper, are still not supposed to be competing at this level. If Kansas City is still four games over .500 at the all-star break I'll be surprised. Baseball is a game of averages. Over 162 games the law of averages says this team can't keep this up. Let's hope the boys in blue can win enough early to sustain a few losing streaks. I'm not being negative, I'm being realistic. 6-2? I may still be dreaming.
