What is the one thing that all women fear? Rape. One definition of rape states rape is "a form of assault where one individual forces another to have sexual intercourse against that person's will. It may be defined as forcing a person to submit to any sex act, and is generally considered one of the most serious sex crimes, as well as sometimes very difficult to prosecute." It makes someone who has a vagina wish there was a way to stop a potential rape right in its tracks. Today, I was talking to my friend John Christie on the phone, when he informed me of something I'd never heard of; the anti-rape tampon. First off let me just say, wow! I had to Google this new piece of information immediately! Now, let me tell you what exactly this product is. The anti-rape tampon was first made in 2000, in South Africa for the purpose of preventing rape. The design of the "tampon" is a hard plastic cylinder, made to be easily inserted into the vagina, with a tension spring blade within the cylinder. In the case of a rape, when the penis is inserted, the tension spring would be activated, in turn the blade inside would stab into the penis; what makes this even worse for the rapist is, the blade cannot be removed without medical attention, and would require a portion of the penis to be removed. Big ouch, huh?! When I read about this, I was having phantom pains! That would bring a new definition of hurt into someone's world. Not to mention castration anxiety. More recently though in 2006, Sonette Ehlers, invented the "RapeX", renamed later "Rape-aXe". This product of protection has a more grim outlook in mind for a potential rapist, however this time in the form of a diaphragm/condom. The Rape-aXe, like the tampon, is designed to be inserted into the vagina; it uses an applicator like a tampon, and is removed in the same fashion. In the event of a rape, the assaulter would insert his penis, but realize something was heinously wrong when he tried taking his penis out. The "condom" is lined with inward-facing barbs, and like the tampon, designed to stay attached the penis until he sought medical attention. I think the only analogy I could use to describe this would be, a fish on a hook. What I love about this is: 1. First and foremost, no bodily fluids would be swapped; so protection against sexual transmitted diseases and pregnancy. 2. It leaves physical evidence that an assault took place, which in many cases there is lack of. The case is then left as "he said, she said". 3. This would make a woman feel more secure in the world around her. 4. It teaches nasty men a lesson. 5. Both products would allow the victim time to escape. I'll now tell the negative words people have said about the Rape-aXe. Words like, barbaric and medieval, have been used to describe Rape-aXe. But isn't rape barbaric and medieval itself? Uh. Yeah! Some have said it would be "brutal on the male". In response, I would just like to say, isn't that the point? If an assault got to the point of rape, any women in her right mind would want it to stop. Theoretically, if you are raped, you spend years on end suffering post traumatic stress disorder, trust issues, possible health problems because of it, depression; the list goes on. Rape is brutal; so fight fire with fire. After reading all of the articles and comments on the Internet, I almost feel like I'm looking at this from one point of view. I read all the negative effects that could happen, but I looked right through them. It's sad that it's gotten to the point where women have to protect one of the most precious thing they have, because there are sick, disturbed people out there, waiting like a spider in a web for them to make one wrong move. It's sad, but true. It seems like women have to be on guard 24/7. So what's the difference in this scenario? Nothing. If a rapist was struck down by either pieces of hardware, I'm certain that he would remember if for the rest of his life; as a rape victim would remember an attack. Maybe next time he'd think twice before assaulting someone! In conclusion, I feel women should always feel protected; be it a can of mace, or a barbed condom. It's a dog-eat-dog world, and everyone, not just females, needs to be aware of the harm others can bestow upon them. Always be prepared, even if other's think it's unusual. In the end you need to protect your the most valuable thing you have, your life. Comments Showing most recent comments first [Show in chronological order instead] |

I predict this device, while well-intentioned, will result in a greater number of rape victims being murdered after the attempted assault.
And Chassedi, your article is both interesting and informative, but please consider checking out a grammar text so that your sentences are correctly structured and accurately punctuated.
Very informative
when are they going to amke one of these for men??
my opinion: genius. You go girl! Interesting topic chass. You never fail to amuse me. :) keep them coming. Tell john I said hi!
All I'm saying here is that this sounds like a product that can also back fire and cause serious injury to a woman as well as a man. Many people had to die to land on the moon. Airplanes fall from the sky. S*** happens! A defective product is not out of the ordinally. You might say I'm an expert in the field design of manufacture. You can use what ever makes you feel safe. I don't see how this product will get approval because it has to be time tested and show it will cause no serious harm to the user. Hey if it passses more power to the people. I certainly wouldn't want to be the first 100 people to test this out and I really wouldn't want to be the test male subject if you catch my drift. By the way, hows the good ol city of Nevada? I graduated there in 1976.
I see two problems wrong with this product. The first. Who is that scared that they are going to wear one of these things 24/7? When should you were one? Some night when you think you might be a target? How often does that occur? Now the biggest problem I see is a woman placing this thing inside her and this thing mistakes her finger for a penis. Or when it's removed, what stops it form accidentlly shooting the knife through something that you don't want to lose yourself. I think if you want to knife a guy, keep a knife in your purse not your vagina, or take self defense classes.
2. A woman can wear it when ever she feels threatened or uncomfortable in a situation (you'd kind of have to be a woman to understand that I guess men don't really have a "red alert" system built in).
3. They are removed by the same applicator that is used to put it in, so therefore, it wouldn't mistake your hand for a rapist. In the case of the tampon, there's a string, I do believe.
4. Although a knife would be an efficient weapon, I definitely wouldn't suggest carrying a knife if you are worried you're going to be attacked, especially in a purse where you'd have to fumble around to find it. A) To use a knife you have to be in close vicinity of the attacker to use it, B) An attacker could easily take the knife away and use it on the victim. In my opinion, pepper spray would be higher on my list of weapons rather than a knife.
5. Not all women have the luxury of self defense classes, and even if so, men are physically stronger than women in most cases.
Thank you for your comment and reading my blog! I appreciate it very much!
I agree with you comepletly. I think that if a man is going to over power a women to get what he wants then he has it coming and I hope that it haunts his dreams every night just like it would have hers.
I am proud of you Chas for writing such a bold blog. Go You GO!!!
Keep up the good work!
Well Chass, all I have to say is wow to that. I would have to agree with all of the points you made. I think if a sicko is going to force a woman, then he has it coming to him. Women have to deal with the terrible life-altering effects from such a situation, so why not the men? If nothing else, I'd definately say it would teach them a lesson.
This was a very well researched and well written blog. Good job! Thank you for having the guts to write about it. Bravo!
BTW - I finally got my blog up on my writer's site, www.tabathagoodwin.com. I'm going to try to update it daily (we'll see how that goes with a 2-year-old). So log on babykins and leave me some comments!

when you cast your rod in shallow water, your bound to get snagged.
what would keep a would-be rapist from trying to kill a woman AFTER she "fish-hooked" his penis?
wouldn't that make an already horrible situation even worse?
