America's obsession with vampiresPosted Saturday, September 12, 2009, at 12:16 AM
Of the many, many, many things that bother me in this world, one thing has just irked me the wrong way since day one -- vampires. They do intrigue me, however, I do not obsess over them as many of my peers have. My mother has even given into the vampire trend! It is only my opinion, but I think it's sort of gross. Besides the fact that the vampires are making pale skin "OK" again, they've really got nothing going for them. (Ha!I say "them" as if they're real!)
I think what bothers me about America ogling over vampires is that, to me, it's borderline necrophilia. Sick. Sick. Sick. I mean, that's something that I thought was shunned! But apparently nobody else has had this thought (except for maybe an actual necrophiliac). What's even worse is that vampires are supposed to be considered terrifying, but now they're seen running around like metro-sexual pretty boys in shows such as Twilight and True Blood. And while vampires are supposed to be seductive to a degree, one has to realize that A) Not only are they dead, but B) They're out for your blood! I'm not knocking the Twilight movies/books, as I've never seen/read any of them. I will confess the first time I saw a preview for the first Twilight, I did want to go see it, but I don't get out to the cinema much. However, I have seen True Blood on HBO. Good Lord that show is terrible. I can't even pin-point why I don't like it. My mom adores it! And it's not like I only watched one episode and decided it was crappy; every Sunday at Mom's, she always has to watch it and usually I'm still there visiting, so I get to view it as well. I've made my decision -- they're super white clammy-looking skin, super-human abilities, and looks just don't do anything for me... at all. And I love the Anna Paquin (a.k.a. Sookie) in everything else I've seen her in, but not this show. I seriously wish I knew why, too. Here's some real-life "food-for-thought." This was an episode on "Forensic Files," I'm not going to elaborate to much, but the storyline goes like this: A baby girl was found dead in the woods by some people walking. The baby and her mother had been reported missing after they'd left one afternoon to go shopping (the dad/husband was at home watching television). The mother/wife that had been reported missing, was a very attractive brunette with flawless white skin. Her naked body was found not to far from the place she'd been shopping, in a sexually suggestive manner. The guy who ended up being charged with the murders was really into vampires and stuff of that nature. It was even reported that his fantasy girl was a vampire; ironically, the woman killed did, minus the fangs, resemble that of his fantasy. So he lived out his fantasy by sexually assaulting this woman, killing her, and strangling her daughter. I know not everyone is a psycho, who's going to take their fantasies to a whole new dimension. However, there are people out there like that. I'm also not saying don't love what the media has put out for your entertainment. What I'm saying is keep a stable mind and don't let these kinds of "obsessions" go too far. Which I know most of the population won't, but you can never be too careful. I'm not into vampires either...
I bet vampires run stop signs. You may want to check into that sometime.
For the record, I am not obsesssed with vampires but I do understand peoples need to be different. Since vampires are different and somewhat taboo, people will flock to the mystic of it all. This will fade as a new subject of obsession will come around in a few years.
Oh, have you noticed how they advertise it? Where you can belong to one "team" or another. This helps people feel like they are part of it and is really clever when you think about it. Just as people want to be different, they also want to belong to something. Twilight feeds these basic needs of society right to them and Americans are eating it up.
Have a Happy Thanksgiving!!!
