Under the Radar and the Biggest EventPosted Monday, July 11, 2011, at 4:39 PM
Sometimes you have to drive to catch the locals play music at the predictable places, but then again often times the most entertaining and fun events aren't always the ones we expect or the ones at those predictable places. Let's make a point this week to mention some musical events that may have normally slipped under the radar, the ones at those unexpected places, and also touch on a few of those main stop events, and give a heads up seven up sneak peek at music in August.
This weekend the performances from Fraught with Peril, Alamo Black, and Archimedian Point & Funkee Noosa at Nathan P. Murphy's is a must attend event in Springfield Missouri. Three of our locals are involved in this event. Nathan Rorabaugh, and Ryan Wallace featured in the Alamo Black band have hailed in Nevada, as well as Fraught front man Justin Larkin. Both Fraught with Peril and Alamo Black have performed in Nevada. This particular event will be held on Friday, July 15th at 8 pm, at the Nathan P. Murphy's Club in Springfield Missouri. If you are under twenty-one please note that the new Springfield city ordinances do not affect Nathan P. Murphy's so minors are still allowed to attend concerts there. A cover charge of $5 for 21 and older, and $7 for those under the age of twenty-one will apply at the door the night of the event. Money well spent, Murphy's is a great venue to see band performances. Make sure to keep your dining dollars local and don't forget to eat at Cherry Street Grill, Del-Way, or another local eatery before you leave Nevada for the show.
What's This? Sometimes you don't have to drive for music when it's on the home front at Aaron's! Are they a furniture and electronics store? Correct! This is all true; Aaron's in Nevada Missouri is not the first place you would expect to have a concert but they will be hosting some live music, and a little mini-fest coming up soon. Music is to be provided by the Curse of Shane Moses band, fronted by local guitarist David Moses Byerly, Ft. Scott local Jeremy Wiltse, and special guest drummer Tony Karns filling in for their regular drummer Brice Leonard. The band will be performing on the Austin Marketplace parking lot in front of the Aaron's store in support of raising money for the Relay for Life, and celebrating Christmas in July at Aaron's! Many decorations are up, even a Christmas tree, and well of course the stockings are hung at the counter with care, so lots of people will show up there. Friday July 29, 2011 from 5 until 8 pm the band will perform live for all of the folks that stop by, and the store will be giving away free drinks to help cool folks down while the band heats things up! For a one dollar donation to the Relay for Life folks can get a chance to win a guitar.
Then the next day it's time for the biggest event for musicians and music enthusiasts the area has seen in a long time, the FREE Musician's Flea Market and Swap Meet. This is going on Saturday July 30 from 10 am until 6:00 pm on the Butler Music parking lot at 103 W. Dakota Street in downtown Butler, Missouri. There will be a live band, a jam session, a live radio remote from KMOE radio, free water and soft drinks, product demos, and a special one-day only sale at the music store. If you have any musical items to sell you can set up a table in the large paved parking lot absolutely free and sell, trade or buy just about anything you want. There will also be one of the nations most knowledgeable vintage guitar experts there to evaluate or make a cash offer on any old instruments you have. No strings attached. You can set up absolutely free, and there is no admission charge! The entertainment is free, and will include a performance from myself, Dangerous Doug Harper, and will feature several drawings for free gifts, guitar teachers on hand for free mini lessons. All water and soft drinks will be free, evaluation of your vintage instruments is also free, and the host Butler Music will be having a huge sale with many great musical items on sale for as much as 70% off. They will also have a flea market style booth in the parking lot selling returns, closeouts and scratch and dent items. If you have any instruments to sell you can set up free, and of course if you have a band you can also set up free and even play a couple songs on the outdoor stage and promote your band if you would like to. If you have a DJ service you can promote it for free. If you have a karaoke service you can promote it for free. The Butler Music is also looking for a few folks to sell something like food, funnel cakes, ice cream, or whatever! I think they may still have some space for that, but you should call them in advance to set that up if you are interested. For more information or to pre-register just call Butler Music at (660) 679-3500.
Now it's time to take a little sneak peek at a couple events coming up in August. Marci Mitchell will be returning to the area and is scheduled to perform at the Sheldon Picnic August 20, 2011 in Sheldon Missouri. She will be returning from Nashville for a visit home, and to showcase her new songs off her newest CD titled "Road Trip". She is fun and heartfelt, with a great singing voice, and fun band. The performance will be in the park on the main stage at around 8pm. Watch for an exact time as the event time comes closer. Then, later in the month at the Viking's 502, Wild Whiskey, which is located three miles south of Nevada just off of Highway 71 on the East side of the road. Point South will be performing! The venue is housed in the same building that was know for years as "Better Place to Be", and now Viking's still seems to hold true to that name in a matter of what people feel when they stop in. The inside has changed from what some folks may remember, and in fact it is larger inside now with a new stage, and dance floor. Viking's will never over charge or break your bank, with great drink specials, and is free to get in on Friday nights for the DJ or Karaoke, then only a small cover of three dollars on Saturday nights when the live music going on. Viking's features top bands from the area, statewide, and out of state artists on occasion. Make sure to post this event to your calendar early: Point South performing live on August 27. The band is made up of four members from Exeter Missouri, and the band performs country and southern rock music.
As always remember if an event was missed please make sure to post it in the comments so we all know about it, and can possibly attend.
