As the year started a much better wind of change blew on the music scene... for a few months anyway.
February brought fame to the area by way of TV's the Voice singer Matt Snook who performed in Ft. Scott Kansas at the Liberty Theater, and then Whey Jennings who took the stage at the Eagles in Nevada, MO.
I launched a crowdsourcing campaign on the net to fundraise to make my next full length album and raised an amazing $65. Needles to say the money was not enough to make the album so it is still in production with hopes of an early spring release. In the mean time to keep the donors in music a compilation is being released with 11 songs from 9 albums - including the first song from the new project as well as some diamonds that have never been released on the internet to date.
Cirque Zuma Zuma was a finalist on America's Got Talent season six, and they made their way to Nevada, MO for a performance at Cottey College in February. They sold out the performing arts theater.
Rick Crooks was back! Not sure if it was because of the low turnout for his comeback performance at Bridges Café or for another reason, but now things are uncertain. Rick later canceled his Music on the square performance as he said that he was "just unable to do it anymore". There has not been any more out of Rick by way of public performance other than a few videos on the internet of him performing since.
March came in like a storm and went out like a dud light bulb. Eight shows were scheduled in the area and then poof only half worked out.
The Barnstormers came a storming from Kansas! The new area band were really exciting audiences and playing everywhere they possibly could in the area and still moving strong. they also recorded a new music project that should be currently available.
Music on the Square made a comeback for its 5th season and things were really at a pinnacle for the first two weeks. Later attendance diminished due to lots of weird weather, and the biblical type rainstorm that rained out the celebrity guests cost the committee (I mean me) $400, other technical expenses made the whole season cost nearly $1,200 uck! Music on the Square in the hole. 2017 season will have Music on the Square only once a month instead of weekly because of the hard loss of attendance, performers, and money in 2016.
The launch of a NEW music website for the area at www.VadaCity.com hit the inter-web in July and since then has made a huge amount of video content and topical stories covering the music scene, and will continue to cover the areas music until further notice.
Our area never seems to be able to get more venues as one opens one dies. The P.M. Barber Shop opened right about the same time that the Bridges Café closed down in August, so we are still even with venues. P.M. Barbershop hosts several different musical type events afterhours at their stage room in hopes to raise awareness that there is another place to get a NEW style.
Trevor presented a show at Christ's Church in September with much push from the Vada City page, video blogging, event page on Facebook and old fashion flyering around town there may have been a sell out crowd per capita.... well almost.
The DeLaney Vineyard and winery has keep their momentum going by consistently hosting their monthly wine fests featuring live music by Matthew Harper, they seem to be growing in popularity. Matthew was also a staple at the Farmers Market NOW located at the Vernon County fairgrounds.
Boomer's Roadhouse closed after a 12 year run - NEW owner now started Jim's Roadhouse! They are hosting live bands about once per month and have embraced my musical talents for a Thursday night show once every two months so make sure to come to the next one, we always have a good time. Things seem to be going well there.
As for 2017 things are sounding like it is going to be a really fun year. I'm still not going anywhere so I'm sure you'll hear from me again in the NEW year. I'll be performing live at Buzz's BBQ on January 19, and then Common Ground Coffee in Ft. Scott on January 26. The future is not written yet, so we'll see just what plays out.
