Take an art tour

Posted Monday, September 29, 2008, at 9:09 PM

There's Something to DO!

So you're not into high school sports. You're too old or too young for this or that. You've seen the movie (If you haven't, why are you sitting there looking at the computer? There's some great shows at the theater!)

Besides that, though, there's lots to see and do in Nevada.

This week, I'll take you on a local art tour. Start on the Square -- at May's Floral and Gift, you'll find some special treasures made by local artists. Also, soon, storefronts around the Square will hold displays in honor of 4-H week. Even in the evening, when many of the stores are closed, strolling residents can take a gander at some of this marvelous art.

While you're on the Square, stop by Bella Rose -- inside there's unique jewelry that can be found nowhere else. Wait -- what's that -- on the wall in the pocket park next to Cavener's, there's a fabulous mural; and near the back of the park there's Vernon County's Sesquicentennial mural, "Crossroads," and there are mosaics, store markings and more that give clues to the town's history throughout the Square -- even the Rinehart jewelry sign is an example of some of the area's unique art. Go just a short distance from the Square in any direction and you'll find more murals, small flower gardens and all sorts art. A couple of blocks away, tucked into the lower floor of the Carnegie Building at Ash and Austin -- a much-mimicked work of art itself -- is the Vernon County Arts Council gallery. If you keep expanding your art tour, you'll find more and more -- folks drawing or painting now and then at the Senior Center, holiday displays, window dressings, murals, Cottey's galleries, and much, much more -- too many to mention, really.

Unbelievably, ll this is free, and the best part is that you can do this over and over again without having the same experience, because storefronts, gallery exhibits and more change frequently; at least monthly, sometimes more often than that.

So Go! See the area's beautiful art! It's free! It's beautiful! It's something to do with you friends. Your spouse. Your kids. Visitors from out of town.

Have fun!
