Hard times and hosiery

Posted Wednesday, February 25, 2009, at 11:34 AM

So, will this economic pressure everyone's feeling buy us freedom from panty hose?

A staple of the professional woman's wardrobe, these items (obviously conceived by a man... have you looked at them when you take 'em out of the package? Do the manufacturers think we're shaped like that?) aren't very durable, and keeping an extra pair in the drawer is getting expensive!

Today, I rose early and got dressed, skirt, top, jacket, nylons -- and I've learned to put these on just before I leave. We have friendly pets whose loving, joyful play means certain death to panty hose. Well, sure enough, the puppy named Crasher ripped three holes in the garment. There was no time to change, so, my worse-for-the-wear stockings and I went on to my appointment. It's enough to make me long for those heavy cotton tights that were in vogue for a while. They were much more durable, but admittedly less attractive. I'm pretty sure the fashion police would hunt me down for that.

The obvious answer: wear pants. But what about those occasions when a skirt's more appropriate, or one just wants to wear a skirt?

One of my friends just doesn't wear them. But my ghost-white legs, with their knobby knees and not-so-smooth tones, need some help. That option would bring on the onslaught of the fashion police as well. What to do?

Another friend said that in the 1940s, when there was a seam up the back, when there were no stockings to be had, some women even drew a line up the back of their bare legs to create the illusion of panty hose.

Thankfully, that fashion has also faded into history.

Tomorrow I'm wearing pants. With pockets. Women need pockets, too!

That's true...My dad uses them to tie up tomato vines. And, knotted into a ball with some feathers sticking out. he fashions them into fake quail to train his bird dog.

Oh NO NO! Tights are back, and in a big way. I LOVE the fact that they're back. Actually, since I moved from MO to Northern VA I've noticed that they never went out up here.

I'd love to go sans panty hose, but my legs are Irish white, who wants to see a ghost legs walking around? I need the hose tan...

Great blog!
