Fun from the past

Posted Tuesday, April 21, 2009, at 11:10 PM

So, 5-year-old son and I left Dad holding down the recliner and checkin' his eyelids for holes on Saturday, and son and I took a little day trip. There were all sorts of things slated to go on around town, and we didn't want to miss 'em all. We drove past the bike auction, but it was over. We went to Cottey, where a sidewalk chalk drawing event had obviously been rained out. Took a photo of a prospective student from Oskaloosa, Iowa, who was sitting with the statues in front of Hinkhouse Center. Dug in my purse for a pen. No pen. I did find a tire pressure gauge and two toy dinosaurs. But the gracious student and her mom supplied a pen, thank goodness.

Later, we made our way to the Fort Scott National Historic Site, where we saw all sorts of wonderful things!

If you've never been to the Fort, it's a fun place to learn with wide open spaces you can play on if you're 5, or if you've brought a 5-year-old along so people will think you're playing just to humor the child.

Anyhow, there were all sorts of re-enactors and living history-type folks there. Plus, great big horses. There was a cavalry demonstration, infantry drill demonstration, folks baking bread, the quartermaster in the supply building.

And by 2 p.m., the rain had ended but the crowd was small, I hope due to the rain. I learned quite a bit on my trip, and Son is still talking about it three days later.

We had a great time. There's nothing like just spending the day with the kids. It doesn't matter where you go. They make it fun, just being thee.
