Walk safelyPosted Wednesday, May 11, 2011, at 10:01 PM
It's great to see so many people out walking in the early evenings. It's good for morale, good for your health-- but I do wish people would use the sidewalks when they're available.
Why don't they? The sidewalk is to give pedestrians a safe place to travel, where they are in little danger from vehicles using the street. What's more, many people don't even bother to move over a little when vehicles approach. That's assuming a lot. What if the driver doesn't see the pedestrians in time to avoid them? I had noticed that also, and the other day, I almost hit someone who was walking on the road.
I haven't seen that problem myself. I've had more of a problem finding a safe place to walk with so many busy streets like Ash with NO sidewalk. Just 1 or 2 feet from the pavement the ground steeply slopes down into the water run off ditch. You either go in the street or try to walk on that 1ft or so of level ground. I know this is a small town and we probably don't need sidewalks on every street but the pedestrians and bicyclists have nowhere else to go on some of our busiest streets. This is not just a problem for the motorists, others have to travel on these streets too.
