Music Mondays

Posted Tuesday, April 17, 2012, at 1:16 PM

The music drifted across the courthouse lawn; loud enough to be heard on the street, not so loud a good conversation could not be had. A steady breeze wafted across the center of the community, while people of all ages listened, played, ate, sat in their cars and even honked a couple of times in appreciation of Leon Troyer's music.

The sounds Monday night were distinctly country. He played some songs of his own that touched the heart. His new CD is a tribute to Route 66; but for the most part really a tribute to small town America and the trials and victories of those people -- sorta what country music is all about.

The best part was that friends and families gathered together for a relaxing, healthy, good time on a Monday. Who'd have thought? Mondays, which have always had a bad rap, now are a shining moment in Nevada.

Car enthusiasts -- people from the 54 Cruisers car club, plus some others who just decided amongst themselves to cruise in for the evening, came by and put their vehicles on display for the event; and Ron Schowengerdt, who's affiliated with the chamber and is himself a classic vehicle enthusiast, said these folks plan to come every time there's a Music Monday -- weather permitting, each Monday, now through June 4.

It's shaping up to be a great summer -- when Music on the Square on Mondays winds down, it'll be time in Nevada for Bushwhacker Days, and the summer festival season will be coming into full swing. Watch the Nevada Daily Mail for events in Walker, Sheldon, Bronaugh, Fort Scott -- all over the place, this summer!

Meanwhile, Nevada's hopping with fun things to do. There's a glow-in-the-dark volleyball tourney at the community center on Saturday (check with the community center for times or cancellations. It's free to watch) and don't miss the Nevada High School Male Handsome pageant on Friday, 7 p.m., at the high school auditorium!

And see you Monday on the Square, at 6 p.m., when Lorrie and Dan Divine will perform!

It's fun. It's relaxing. It's free. What more can you ask for?
