Daughter of the Band

I've never heard any discussion on the topic, but as the daughter of a "band man" I often wonder about what my rights are as "daughter of the band". My father was a drummer for the family band at the young age of ten. He's been in a band ever since. I've been a member of the crowd, and on occasion, a sort of roadie.

Many of my memories are of Dad behind a guitar or a drum kit, on stage or in our living room. Though he was and is many other things than a musician, his passion has been music. This love has transferred to his children. Unfortunately his talent has not been bestowed upon all of us. I can't carry a tune and I can't teach myself to play anything as my father has with his natural ear for music. That's besides my point. It doesn't matter how untalented I am, I still love music and my favorite musician is naturally, Dad. He's been at it for longer than I've been alive and he is finally a full-time musician for the Ben Miller Band, traveling between Missouri, Kansas and Arkansas weekly.

It's surreal to sit in a crowd in which nobody knows your father and they're all cheering for him and the rest of the band. I cheer right along and wonder if Dad also thinks it's strange to see me out in the crowd. Sometimes I pay to see Dad's band, sometimes I don't. Sometimes I get free drinks, but usually not. Usually I get front row seating, but I admit I feel violated if someone gets my seat. My favorite role is shooting film.

When I walk around the band, getting great shots, I get this feeling people are looking at me and wondering if I'm just some uber-obsessed fan. Whenever I've stayed to talk with the band afterwards, staff are sometimes rude to me as if I am exactly that. Should I be wearing some kind of sign and if so, what should it say? I'd like to get points of view from others in the same position. Do I have special rights as "daughter of the band" or am I the same as all the other fans? I wonder what Kelly Osbourn would say.

I think you definitely entitled to some special treatment! They should get you an honorary t-shirt or badge. "My dad is the drummer!" or something. People shouldn't look at you as a uber-obsessed fan. YOU ARE THEIR BIGGEST FAN and you should get kudos for that! How cool to have a dad in a band!
