Getting from A to B

I am not frequently (or ever) a person in need of public transportation. However, I've noticed that there are many people in this town who are. Many other people depend on their scooter-chairs to commute across town daily. That may not be the best way to get around town but it's better than your two feet if you're disabled.

I've been fortunate enough to have my own car and be able to drive it for most days of the past few years. I never realized how much tougher life can be without that luxury. It's not something you're likely to think about unless it happens to be you. But now that I AM thinking about it I wonder, am I crazy or is the "public transportation" in this town a sick joke?

Who can afford to pay $6 ONE way? That means if I can't walk to the grocery store to get some medicine or some necessity and I pay the taxi to take me there and back, I'm out $12 plus what I've spent at the store. That seems outrageous in this little town. I used to pay $1 to get a taxi all the way across Pittsburg, Kansas when I missed the school bus in high school (before I got my car!).

And correct me if I'm wrong, but there's only one cab service here. Can you say monopoly? I'd say they're making a lot of money at those prices, but like I said who can afford to use it regularly? Many of the people who need the cab service wouldn't if they could buy a car or even a scooter chair!

I just read in the local newspaper that M-NOD will now take over the city's taxi coupon program and handicapped accessible vans. I also read that though On My Own had expressed wishes to bid on operating the service, they weren't asked. They were disappointed and so was I. It would be nice to see what another company might do with the service.

i agree with you. Maybe someone needs to open another taxi service.

I feel that this way: I know this town is not big enough for a bus service but I still think it is a good idea to get one. Or something that is more reasonably cheaper than $6.00 one way trip in a taxi! That is outrageous!

People do take their vehicles for granted (some do let me rephrase that). And in all in all it is they way we need to get from point A to B. But at what expense as well as the gas prices continue to go higher and higher I will soon be riding a bike to and from College at these rates! I do have a car but gas is getting so darn expensive!

That is anthoer reason we need a bus service for everyone to use!

Natalie Leeper's response:
A bus service would be a great service to the community and the environment. Unfortunately, that is something that Nevada is probably a long way from accomplishing. Pittsburg (with a population of around 20,000) only recently started a bus system that just goes from one end of town to the other down the main drag. It takes a lot of customers to keep something like that running, not to mention starting it up.
