Speak English

Posted Thursday, September 6, 2007, at 3:51 PM

"Hello, my name is Sydney, may I speak to the owner of the business," a heavily accented female voice said on the telephone.

"Speaking," I replied.

"Your business can be the top listed business on Google, Yahoo or...", this almost unintelligible woman with an Indian accent said before I hung up the phone.

I hate these unintelligible phone calls that I receive around the first of every month. I don't particularly object to the telemarketing calls, but they had darn well better be understandable.

Having owned a business for over 30 years I understand the need to cut the cost of doing business and even though I don't like the concept, I understand why a corporation, which only cares about the bottom line, would move their telemarketing to a country where they can pay workers little or nothing to perform this service.

But if they are going to do this, they should at least require the company they hire to do this to have people who actually speak English so it can be understood by the average American.

They are unlikely to sell me their product anyway, since I learned to say no to telemarketers a long time ago, but quit insulting my intelligence with someone calling himself or herself by an American sounding name, when that obviously is not the case.

Yes, I could sign up for the no-call list, but I do occassionally get calls from marketers that I want to talk to.

Besides, that won't stop the non-stop telephone calls that everyone receives during a presidential election year.

You should hear the calls from around here (Washington D.C. area). Most of them are automated AND in a completely different language. They don't even bother with accented English anymore... I miss fast food employees who understand me as well.

My mom called me once, while I was at work, and just HAD to tell me about the bank ATM machine asked her English or Spanish! I asked her if that was it, and she said "Yes." I just shook my head and told her I was busy and laughed at her. It was just so funny how frantic she was about it.
