Sarah....not so plain..not so tall...

Posted Tuesday, April 12, 2011, at 4:58 PM

Since this is my first blog post, I decided to skip the whole "getting to know" this blogger bit and just let you read my random tales. In the end, the combination of all of them will give you a better idea of who I am more than any adjectives I could come up with anyways. So...here goes:

I was driving along a few months ago and asked my brother to reach into my billfold and pull out my bank card. When he did, he noticed a concert ticket tucked behind the card. It was a ticket to see an orchestra in Rome, Italy, in 2009. He asked me why I kept it in my billfold where the corners were getting tattered, instead of a scrapbook. I told him the reasoning behind it, and I'm going to share it with you too.

I said to him, "There once was this girl who was a senior in high school. She was your typical girl...not the most popular...but not disliked. Average. She was in show choir, yet was very timid and shy. She was all set to compete in a solo competition on a Friday during school. Before she left, she spoke to an adult figure/staff member about what her plans were after high school. For the sake of not "naming names" we'll just say that this person was not very motivating and didn't really believe in the girls potential. The person told the girl that she might as well look into developing a trade because she wouldn't be able to afford college and most likely wouldn't be accepted anyways. This left the girl very discouraged and hopeless. She left for the competition feeling unworthy. Entering the room with the judge was unbearable...more judgement just seemed a bit much. She had worked very long and hard on her solo piece titled 'Der tod und das madchen' ..it was a German opera piece. She cowered under the pressure and didn't do well. Needless to say, she didn't make state choir. Now, flash forward three years later. This same girl has just sat down in a balcony seat of a theater where an orchestra is to take place. She is in Rome, Italy,...a trip her college has paid for. Not only did she get accepted into a wonderful college, but she was voted Senior Class President. The maestro raises his hands and the orchestra begins to play. They are playing that familiar German song...'Der tod und das madchen.' The irony is overwhelming and a smile spreads across her face. This girl is me. I keep that ticket in my billfold so every time I open it I know....I know that I am not who other people define me to be. I am much more than that. Everytime I feel unsure or sad, I take that ticket out and remember that the only person in charge of my happiness is me and nobody can tell me who I am."

Don't ever change and don't ever accept people's limitations of who you're supposed to be. Only you can decide what your end result in life will be. You're supposed to be you...no more, no less. :)

Seriously------you share from the heart and that is what it's all about. That message was powerful and you may very well have helped someone else from falling into that ugly pit of despair.
