Pushing the Envelope

Hollywood used to be part of the United States. I don't know for sure when that changed but sometime in the 1970s Hollywood drifted away from America and has attached itself to some other country, probably France.

Sure, drive west into the People's Republic of Azatlan, formerly known as the state of California, and head to the weirdest city in the Western Hemisphere. Oops, sorry about that, once in the state moral compasses go into a spin until they finally explode. It's a given, all cities in California are weird. Picking out the weirdest is an exercise in futility.

Use a map and locate Los Angeles. Hollywood is an ill-defined area in and around the city where arrogant, self-centered hypocrites preach to the rest of us what they think we should do. Notice they never turn their all-seeing eye on themselves. The revelation would cause them to burst into flames.

One of the most annoying traits of Hollyweirdos is their desire to always push the envelope. They don't care if the audience wants to watch it, they will force-feed the trash if they have to. It's amazing, the self-absorbed preening that goes on with these jerks. They will brag about how they broke the rules to make this or that piece of garbage by 'pushing the envelope' but they never seem to take the time to explore the new ground they've uncovered.

Oh no, not for them the hard work of actually thinking about how this new freedom could be used to explore the human condition. They now have to go beyond what they've already done and 'push the envelope' yet again.

One of these days there will be no envelope to push. It's a race to the bottom of the sleeze pile with these people. Eventually there will have to be a stop or they will be making movies that are nothing but 90 minutes of hard-core sex and mutilation and blood-spilling. Or mutilating the one they are having hard-core sex with.

What the geniuses in Hollyweird don't get is that audiences aren't the ones pushing envelope. They don't care about envelope pushing, they want an entertaining story. Entertaining stories are out there. G-rated entertainment actually makes more money for studios than R-rated movies but the producers, directors and others think of themselves as auteurs instead of entertainers.

They don't want to entertain anyone, they want to get the accolades of their peers and they do that by sneering at traditional American values. Values that made this country arguably the greatest nation on earth.

Michael Moore has achieved a lot by trashing America and as much as I detest him I am more disgusted with someone like Robert Redford. Redford is man who got where he is by portraying himself as someone who upheld American values but in actuality despises them.

Redford has a new movie out, Lions for Lambs. The trailers for the movie make it out to be supportive of traditional values but it is far from it. I'll not see it until it comes out on DVD and I can minimize my contribution to him.

Watch it I will. Redford is a filmmaker who knows his craft. He is not inept or lacking in ability. His talents, however, are limited to film and don't transfer to real life very well. His politics are infantile and lack depth of thought.

It's a shame too because if he could pull his head out where it is presently located he could make a decent picture that helps support this country and the values that made it great. That will never happen, it doesn't push the envelope.
