Racial politics

Race entered the 2008 presidential politics despite Barack Obama's attempt to run as a post-racial figure. The door burst open when it was revealed that Obama's pastor, a man who had mentored him and performed his marriage ceremony, had used his pulpit to attack Jews, the United States, and whites.
Supporters of Obama say you can't judge Obama by his pastor. That's true, but only to a point. That point is when evaluating Obama's claims that he is 'post-racial' You can't blame Obama for his pastor's words themselves but you can hold him to account for the way he reacted to those words. Did he take issue with the pastor and rebuke him for the intemperate remarks? Did he change his church fellowship to distance himself from the sort of man who made such remarks? There are a host of questions one could ask about his relationship with this pastor and most would be legitimate. Questions have been raised about John McCain's relationship with a pastor who supports him. There is a big difference however, McCain doesn't belong to the pastor's church and doesn't have the same kind of relationship Obama and his pastor have. The question I have is do you hold McCain to a different standard because he's white? Do you hold him to a different standard because he's Republican? Or do you just have one standard applicable to all candidate's? We need to have an open debate about race, if only because nothing else will ever start to put the issue behind us. It won't be easy and there will be all sorts of unpleasantness. Radicals on every side will weigh in with their hatred. While it will be very unpleasant it is sometimes necessary, just as it is sometimes necessary to lance a boil to drain the poison from it. It won't solve all the problems we Americans have with racial issues but it would make it easier to seek the solutions. I look at it much the same I do ripping a bandage off a hairy arm. It's going to be painful but if you do it quickly enough the pain will at least be over more quickly, if not any the less painful. I think for some reason people seem to forget that Sen. Obama is as much white as he black. He had a white mother and a black father; so really he is a white man, because the child is the race of the mother.
"Obama's pastor, a man who had mentored him and performed his marriage ceremony, had used his pulpit to attack Jews, the United States, and whites." Doesn't he have that right as some in this county should have the same right not to like blacks, browns, jews and yellows without interference from the government?
The pastor has a right to say what he wants. The question is should Obama be sitting in the pews of a church that spreads divisiveness while running on a platform of inclusiveness?
Race burst onto the scene when Obama's pastor spoke his piece?? What about what Bill Clinton had to say about Obama's race prior to South Carolina's election? What about Geraldine Ferraro's remarks about Obama as a black candidate in this year's historical presidential election? Sorry Steve, usually your prudence and insight are spot on but not today, not this time. Shine the spotlight of racism where it's best directed -- right here in our own community. Have the guts to write about that, hrmmm? Yeah, thought not.
For the record I correctly stated that Obama was attempting to run a post-racial campaign, period end of sentence. I then said the door burst open, sure there had been incidents that had been discussed but nothing like the bombshell that exploded when Reverend Wright's words were splashed all over the news.
As for racism in our community, it exists and it always will. As long as people exist they will divide themselves into groups. If not by race then by some other variable, nationality, hair color or education level and there will always be some idiot thinking that membership in a particular group bestows special privileges on it. As Ron White says, you can't cure stupid.
Oh, by the way: http://www.nevadadailymail.com/blogs/stevemoyer/en...
Been there, done that.
It is suggests that you are implying he is not white, because his pastor "had used his pulpit to attack Jews, the United States, and whites." Then later you mentioned that Sen. McCain was white. So it appears to me that you like the rest of media want to keep race an issue.
If thats where he wants to go to church, then he gets what he gets when the voters who dont like it dont vote for him.
The last time I read freedom of religion is a constitutional right. But with freedom also comes responsibility for ones actions and with whom we affiliate ourselves.
mvenice,
"Shine the spotlight of racism where it's best directed -- right here in our own community."
Have you ever been to East Los Angles or East St Louis or some of the Indian Reservations out West or the projects in New York City? Now that's racism at its finest
Maybe you should live in one of those places if it is too out of control here.
I don't agree with the comment from mvenice BUT the comment appeared to be an honest opposite viewpoint, and well stated.
Bodybag, on the other hand, seems to want us to view his comments as just being a contrary point of view, BUT he gives me the impression that he is merely a smart ass know it all idiot.
Remember Steve, you can not argue with an idiot, since he will only drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.
The thing is some people take the relative anonymity of the Internet and go wild, forgetting that their cyberDNA is all over their postings. Bodybag has already run afoul of the rules and he will undoubtedly do so again, thinking he is immune to repercussions.
Maybe you don't agree with what I write. At least I am intelligent enough not to use vulgarities towards others on the blog. So maybe Mr. Moyer should follow what he preaches and run his blog without prejudice.
Note to Bodybag:
Racism doesn't have to be "out of control" for it to be a problem, all it takes is one incident to get the ball rolling. Worse yet, a nonchalant (perhaps ignorant?) attitude by members of the community in response to such will surely complicate matters, don't ya think?
Oh and perhaps I should enlighten you about some of those places you mentioned....I'm not so sure about you but yes, I've been to some of those places you listed.
I lived in Southern California and personally experienced the 1992 L.A. Riots and even worked on a few of its reconstruction efforts (and I'm not the only Nevada resident, either...). To this day, I still remember how acidic the stench in the air smelled the morning after the verdict came down that exonerated the officers who had pulled Rodney King over and arrested him...and the blood that was shed when Reginald Denny's head was beaten with bricks....etc...
I spent a summer on the Colorado River Indian Reservation in Parker, AZ, one of the more impoverished communities in the state.
I lived in St. Louis, MO near Tower Grove Park for 18 months and as one of the few white people in the area, was in the minority and yet, I counted people of all races and cultures as my neighbors whom I could turn to for assistance or help.
I could go on but I won't. My point is, I see racism occuring because many folks here in Nevada haven't once stepped outside their comfort zones and been exposed to other races and cultures.
The truth is, we have people who have lived their entire lives here in Nevada who have never learned how to communicate with others using language that doesn't offend or upset someone, who have never learned how to compromise and get along with someone they might not necessarily like (and not because of the color of their skin but rather, because of their personality or other such reasoning), and more importantly, who have never been held accountable for their skewered viewpoints and prejudiced opinions.
So do me a favor, Bodybag, think before you type...otherwise you would have mentioned Chicago's south side, Kansas City's East Bottoms, East Memphis, North Little Rock, and any number of other communities with a diversified population...which is exactly what Nevada doesn't have. No, not really.
mvenice:
What about Detroit, Washington DC, New Orleans and Miami FL? I could go on and on and on.
As you wrote "I lived in Southern California and personally experienced the 1992 L.A. Riots and even worked on a few of its reconstruction efforts (and I'm not the only Nevada resident, either...). To this day, I still remember how acidic the stench in the air smelled the morning after the verdict came down that exonerated the officers who had pulled Rodney King over and arrested him...and the blood that was shed when Reginald Denny's head was beaten with bricks....etc"
How do you explain this anti-social behavior? Is that what you want here? You lived it and if this area is is on the edge of utter chaos why would want to be here? Let me tell you a little secret this country is on the edge of a racial Armageddon that will make the LA riots look like a picnic.
You didn't say it but, why should I (we) feel sorry for those fools in LA or where ever who burn down their on neighborhoods and can not act how society has dictated?
I will agree that a lot of the "true locals" have never been anywhere, maybe they have traveled to the big scary town of Joplin and that's about it. I don't know why anybody would want to lived in this "sewer" we call Nevada/Vernon County? Along with racism around here, there are other more important issues, i.e. sexes crimes, sex offenders, a meth/drug problem and alcohol consumption that is out of control. So I think we have enough to worry about. A lot of "locals" don't think I mentioned are a problem, but they need to pull their heads out of the sand and look around.
Think about this, maybe the people don't want diversified population here? Maybe they don't want the issues that a New Orleans, Chicago's south side, Kansas City's East Bottoms, East Memphis or North Little Rock have?
I could be wrong................?
I'm probably more liberal on most issues than not, except for the death penalty and making our borders more strict. I feel that Steve was just reporting on what happened in this article and was asking open questions. I really didn't feel that he was pushing one side or the other.
What Obama's pastor had to say would of course make the news especially during an election time. Obama said that he didn't agree with what the pastor had to say. I don't know but I would think that he will probably distance himself more from the pastor and his church. Yes, the pastor can say what ever he wants but with him being associated with a candidate it's going to make news especially when it's preaching hate towards whites and Jews. If Obama went to the church in Kansas that was protesting soldiers funerals that would make the news. I feel that the media does make race a big issue in this election unfortunately but I don't know how I would be able to protest or make a difference against it. It seems like my vote didn't help or make much of a difference the last 2 Presidential elections but hopefully this time it will.
Having lived in Compton Ca. durring the Watts riots.(wonderful 60's) It was an experiance not to be forgotten. But my neighbors (black) shielded me and advised me when to leave and where to go. In the military we were a mixed division. However, I find in lily white Nevada the black experience either way is far away. If I'm not affected it don't happen. Had issue with a Nevada citizen recently. Was told there wern't ANY blacks in the military when he was in. Asked him about several honored units. His response was those reports were all propaganda, and the blacks were not really there. Whats scary is this man is a leader in some veteran organizations in this county. It was also stated this race was of no good.
They were slaves and needed to be treated as such. Welcome to Nevada!
Regarding the last comment by theboz, please don't take idiotic comments by a few locals as being typical of Nevada.
I was born and raised here and yes I know my hometown is not perfect, but it far surpasses any other place I visited during my world travels with Uncle Sam's Navy. The fact that you found a veteran with such idiotic opinions, doesn't mean he is typical. He is not typical of the military or of Nevada.
However, since this is a free country, they have the right to display their idiotic opinions. I do not personally know anyone in my hometown that spews the venom that you describe.
You need to find a better class of friends, and then you would be able to greet others by saying "Welcome to Nevada".
Don't be a professional "fault finder", and look instead for something good in Nevada.
Diogenes,
I to lived in Nevada most of my life. Was here until the 9th grade. Went to Long Beach for last years of school.
Played a while for uncle sam in Cambodia.(1969) Came back to Nevada and have been here since. And I do not classify this type person my friend. Nevada has been a good place to live. As I look toward retirement I can't think of a better place to be.
However, it is people like the afore mentioned man that tarnishes the image.
I have gotten so mad about his rantings, I have asked several of my friends to come and join local organizations. Believe me they are going to come just to prove to this person that there are indeed blacks in the Military now and were when he was in the military. My basic training at Fort Polk D.I. said that it dosen't matter what color the finger is on the gun that will save your life, just hope they are MAN enough to pull the trigger to save your life. Life in general is like that. We are all in this together. Be carefull whos' toes you step on today. Might be attached to the butt you have to kiss tommorrow.
All this talk about racism and we do have it here in Nevada if we like it or not. My daughter was raped by a man when she was twelve, and what was done about that? They slapped him on the wrist so he could do it again. The "prosecutor" told the judge she consented, she was 12, and said that she was 14. I remember the law says your not a consenting adult until 18. I sat in that court room, with a court avociate and my daughters counselor crying and thinking why us, but then I realized that the "prosecutor" had no intention of doing he job. We were not able to speak, or so I thought because he was lying to the judge and he new I would make him look like the fool he is. Maybe if all of us common people stood together instead of fighting against one another we could get something accomplished. My daughter is still having a rough time. We need to stand together and really do what is best for everyone, get along. We are coming on some hard times and if we don't stick together we will lose more than we know. I so agree with the person who said we have our own problem here the Meth and drinking, sex offenders etc. We can start by fixing us first. Yeah Nevada is a closed minded community, but there is a lot of good in that too. We have problems, but we need to realize so does everyone else. Why would a prosecutor let someone who held a knife at a twelve year old and rape her go? Just because she looks older? Just because he thought she had sex before? I'm a mother of four, so your telling me if I was raped tomm. that it's ok because I have had it before? Come on people open up and realize that we are a little bit like the racial towns around us, everyone is looking out for themselves instead of when I was little and you looked out for others.
AmyBrooks
Its tragic that your daughter had the crime of rape perpetrated against her. You hit the point I was trying to make, but a lot of the people are scared to write and want waste time on issues that are a waste of time. They apparently don't want to discuss the real issue in this community.
Is the individual on the sex offender list? If so let the world know what his name is so we'll know who this person is. Go to this website and we can all see picture of some of our "good" citizens. www.mshp.dps.missouri.gov/MSHPWeb/PatrolDivisions/...
To get back to the main subject of Racial Politics, everybody should listen to the preaching of
The Hon. James David Manning, PhD of the ATLAH Worldwide Ministries he preaches the truth and how most of the people think but are too afraid to say or write. Watch: www.youtube.com/watch?v=khuu-RhOBDU
Think about this, some want to hide and some try to intimidate others with threat of civil litigation suggesting that there are some type of "repercussions" if you speak what you believe. I guess repercussions have happened in the past, to a man named Jesus.
