Habitat for Humanity to unveil latest home in public dedication

Friday, August 8, 2003

The local Habitat for Humanity Affiliate plans to dedicate its sixth house this Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. The public is invited to the ceremony and to tour the house. This latest house is located at 929 south Cedar and has been under construction since February. More than 30 volunteers have participated in this construction project as well as more than a dozen commercial firms who have donated materials, labor or have reduced prices. The recipients of house number six are Pam and Dean Harth and granddaughter, Tonya, and they will be moving in very soon after the dedication. There is still some driveway work to be completed but the inside of the house is ready to be occupied. Habitat for Humanity is an international organization which works to upgrade inadequate housing in countries all over the world. Many more than 10,000 homes are completed each year in the United States. Several times that number are constructed world wide each year. Recipient families receive an interest-free mortgage payable over 15 to 20 years. Funds for local building are raised by cash donations and fund raisers, the most prominent of which folks here know as the monthly potato bar throughout the fall, winter and spring. As houses are completed, the mortgage payments add to the income and make future income a little more available. In larger communities, 'corporate sponsors' undertake the materials cost of entire houses. The local affiliate, Nevada Mo. Area Habitat for Humanity, was formed in 1993 and the first house was completed in February, 1997. It took another year to raise enough money to pay the suppliers. Thanks to the many donors, added income from mortgage payments, the bills for the present house are paid and fund raising for the next house to be built in the 1100 block of north Adams in underway. Recipient families for the next two houses have been chosen. Ground breaking for house number seven will be done soon and foundation work completed this fall. House number eight will follow in the 200 block of north Lynn. Note to the community: Habitat for Humanity is always in need of workers and donations. Community interest and commitment has helped complete six houses in the area and note that continued help will speed up the building of "Simple, Decent Housing" for some of those who need a lift.
