Inferno destroys Vernon County home

Tuesday, October 7, 2003

A fire erupted at the home of Leonard and Lucy Garrett about 5:30 p.m. Sunday. Compton Junction and Milo fire departments responded to the blaze, which completely destroyed the home. The firefighters spent more than two hours fighting the fire, and at one point, witnesses said, flames shot high above nearby treetops, and some reported that a propane tank next to the home exploded during the fire. No one was injured and the cause of the fire has not been determined. Vernon County Ambulance personnel and Sheriff's deputies assisted firemen at the scene. The Nevada Fire Department provided water from a hydrant on Ashland. As firefighters battled the flames Caleb Martin watched as Compton Junction firefighters finished putting out the fire that destroyed his grandparents' home. "We were supposed to come here and watch the game today, but we went to Wal-Mart instead," Martin said. The Garretts have lived in the two connected mobile homes for 22 years. The couple had recently spent $10,000 to remodel the kitchen and were preparing to put a new roof on the house.
