HARRISONVILLE, Mo. -- An inability to set the offense hurt the Lady Tigers' varsity in their volleyball opener against Harrisonville on Thursday. Nevada's varsity fell 25-20 and 25-19 to the Wildcats in a non-conference matchup. "We played very scrappy defense and got a lot of balls up and over," said Nevada coach Sharla Wilkerson, "but we just couldn't get any offense going." Newcomers to the team, varsity basketball starters Hillary Adams and Lacy Leonard, made their presence felt. Adams led in scoring with five points, including two aces, while Leonard led the team in blocks with four. Returning starter Jenny McCullough paced the Tigers in kills with four. Said Wilkerson, "Overall, we played well. It was a tough loss to start the season." Junior varsity Nevada's JV also suffered defeat in its opener, losing 25-17 and 25-14 to Harrisonville. "It was nice to finally play in a game situation," said JV coach Allison Gorman. "We definitely know now the level we will need to play at to compete." Sophomore Elizabeth Bain led the Tigers with six points, including three aces. Freshmen The freshmen team averted a sweep by Harrisonville with a victory. Nevada won 25-20 and 25-18 over the Wildcats. "I thought the girls played very well for their first high school match," freshmen coach Lisa Ballou said. "We have some things to work on, but overall they played well." Kellie Cooper was the scoring leader with five points in the first game and eight in the second. The Tigers open the conference season on the road against Carthage on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
