Lady Tiger golfers climb over Pleasant Hill

PLEASANT HILL, Mo. -- Nevada High School girls golf team opened its season with a 27-stroke victory over Pleasant Hill on Wednesday. Contested on the front nine of the Quarry Course, a 2,518-yard (ladies tees), par-36 layout at the Country Creek Golf Club, the Tigers top four scores totaled 241 to 268 for the Chicks. "We proved that we have six girls who can shoot in the 50's and 60's," said Nevada coach Kelly Gray, "so it is only a matter of time until they are in the 40's and 50's. The young Tigers were led by sophomore Emily Benbrook, who garnered medalist honors with a 57, while sophomore Tabitha Pitts was runner-up at 59. Senior Sara Copeland and junior Rachel Prewitt carded 62 and 63, respectively. Two other sophomores, Eleanor Horst (65) and May Ling Butterfield (68), rounded out the Tiger team scoring. Butterfield's 68 was a personal best. Scoring for the Chicks were Kimberlee Onkker (62), Ashley Howard (63), Tara Trader (71) and Ashley Carver (72). Nevada hosted Clinton on Wednesday. Scores were unavailable at press time. The Tigers next match is against Uniontown at Fort Scott Community College on Friday at 1 p.m.
