New champion, same hometown. Once again, golfers from Carthage, Mo., won the championship flight of the senior division of the Men's Senior Golf Tournament held at Frank E. Peters Municipal Golf Course on Tuesday. Tournament director Larry Testman hosted a full field of 66 teams from Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas and Oklahoma at the 12th annual two-man scramble. The Borland brothers from Carthage, Glen and Joe, saw their three-year reign as champions come to an end, but the Borland name still sits atop the leaderboard. Gary Borland, another brother, and his partner Bynum Alumbaugh, also from Carthage, claimed the title with a 9-under par 63. Glen and Joe finished second with a 65 in the one-day event. Said Glen, "We'll come after 'em next year. We had a little trouble on the front side, but we'll get 'em next time." Joe, ribbing younger brother Gary, said, "We had a pretty good run. We just didn't get off to a good start. But he (Gary) had Alumbaugh carrying him." There were also newly crowned victors in the championship flight of the super-senior division (ages 65-and-up). Jim Franklin and Joe Brown, both from Springfield, Mo., won with an 8-under 64, unseating the 2002 champions, Richard Lee and Norm Thomas of North Kansas City, Mo., who fell to third place. The competition featured hotly contested matches in both the senior and super-senior brackets. Four strokes separated the top five teams in both the senior and super-senior championship flights. There was a two-stroke difference between first- and fifth-places in the senior A flight and one-stroke difference between the top four in the super-senior A flight. The top five teams in the senior B flight tied with 75s, as did the top four teams in the super-senior B flight. Places were determined by scorecard playoffs.
