Tigers produce decent showing at district tennis tourney

The Nevada Tigers finished sixth in the 12-team MSHSAA Class 1, District 5 Tournament at Millenium Tennis and Fitness Club in Joplin, Mo. Although no Nevada participant advanced to Saturday's finals, the Tigers performed well in Friday's preliminary round, scoring 11 points. "It was the most points we've scored in district in some time," said Nevada coach Leon Lowe, "and we're looking forward to improving on that record next year." Nevada's No. 1 singles player Alex Hardin drew a bye in the first round, then defeated Mulligan of Mount Vernon, 6-0, 6-0, in second- round action. Hardin then lost to Spencer Menees of Carthage, the top seed, 6-0, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. Luke Littell, the Tigers' No. 2 singles player, defeated Kathcart of Richland, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1, before losing to Reese of Greenwood in the second round. The doubles team of Derek Fast and Justin Hou drew a first-round bye, then defeated the team of Stockreef and King of Osage, 7-5, 6-3. They lost to the No. 1-seeded Mount Vernon duo of G. and A. Hinojosa, 6-0, 6-0, in the quarterfinals. The final Nevada doubles pairing of Eric Delaney and Taylor Hall dropped its first-round match to the team of Garcia and Killon of Monett, 6-0, 6-1. In a tight race between the top four teams, Carthage and Webb City emerged as the winners. The top two teams advance to the sectional round. Carthage edged Webb City, 22-21, to claim the team title. Thomas Jefferson was a close third with 20 points, followed by Mount Vernon with 19 1/2.
