Cottey spikers swept by Baptist Bible

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The Baptist Bible College has the Cottey Comets' number. For whatever reason, the Comets cannot seem to play well against this team. Cottey (4-6) traveled to Springfield, Mo., on Tuesday to try to avenge an earlier loss to the Patriots. BBC handled the Comets even more easily than before, sweeping them in three games, 25-30, 22-30 and 30-32. "I don't know why we play so poorly against BBC," said Cottey coach Marla Kannady. "Both times we have faced them we have played some of the worst volleyball we have ever played. Seeing them on the opposite side of the net seems to bring out the worst in us." Not much went right for the Comets as they fell behind early in each of the first two matches and never recovered. Game three looked like another BBC romp as the home team jumped to a quick 15-5 lead. However, the Comets finally showed signs of life as they valiantly fought back. The Comets pulled even at 18. The teams tied at 21 and 29 before Cottey finally took the lead at 30-29. But three straight points by the Patriots closed out the match win. "It was frustrating to let that one get away," said Kannady. "Still we should not have been in the position of having to make up a 10-point deficit." Lauren Walker continued her assault on Cottey's single-season assist record with 31. Jessica Puskar had 11 kills, while Liz Hutchinson and Sayo Tsuboi had 17 and 13 digs, respectively. Carey Chenoweth added nine kills and 10 solo blocks. The Comets hope to regroup with a little "home cooking" when they entertain Allen Community College, LaBette County Community College and Coffeyville Community College in three matches in four days -- Allen CC on Friday, Labette County on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Coffeyville on Monday at 7 p.m. -- at Hinkhouse Gymnasium.
