WALKER, Mo. -- The Hume Lady Hornets retained their spotless Vernon County Conference record with a doubleheader sweep of rivals Bronaugh and Northeast Vernon County on Thursday. Hume, 4-0 in conference play, and NEVC engaged in a thrilling, nip-and-tuck brawl, going three games to determine the winner. A mere point differential of four -- for the complete three-game series -- separated the two evenly matched teams. The Lady Knights edged Hume 25-23 in the first game, then the Hornets regrouped to win the second and third by identical 25-22 scores. "This was an intense match, very competitive," said Hornet coach Amy Patterson. "NEVC definitely gave us a run for our money, as both teams played really well." Hume's Kayla O'Rear, Cindy Murdock and Kayla Morrison posed a triple threat for the Hornets with 15, 14 and 13 points, respectively. Murdock, Morrison, Katie Sneed, Nicole Hinton and Janine Castillo were the Hornet block and kill leaders. The Hornet spikers dispatched Bronaugh in the other half of the twinbill, 25-13, 25-16. O'Rear, rounding out a stellar performance, led Hume with 17 service points, while Hinton and Morrison scored nine and six, respectively. Murdock, Sneed, Castillo and Hinton again topped the solo block and kill stats.
