Undefeated NMS Tigers add two to win column

Wednesday, October 1, 2003

The unbeaten Nevada Middle School eighth-grade football team picked up two more wins. The Tigers defeated Carthage 20-6, then toppled Neosho 12-6. On the Carthage victory, Nevada coach Jamie Alexander said, "It turned into a real dogfight early, but, in the end, we wanted it more than they did." Leading only 6-0 at halftime, the Tigers put the game away with 14 second-half points. Running back Jordan Kerbs was a one-man wrecking crew, scoring on two rushing touchdowns and a 65-yard interception return. The Tiger defense dominated, allowing the only Carthage score when they turned the ball over on their own 5-yard line late in the game. Cole Bond and Jerrod Alexander led the "D" with 10 tackles apiece. Alexander also had a pick. "Our defense was tenacious," said Jamie Alexander. Out-sized, but not out-toughed against Neosho, the Tigers rebounded from a 70-yard touchdown run on the game's second play to defeat the Wildcats. The defense, led by the up-front group of Matt DeBoutez, Kyle Hughes, Colten Johnson, Spenser Daniels, Jeremy Evans and Logan Harms, held Neosho to 116 yards of total offense. The Tigers, led by running back Ronnie Herda's two touchdowns, totaled 250 yards of offense. Herda, who accounted for 114 yards, scored one on the ground and caught a pass from quarterback Kyle Hughes for the other. Coach Alexander cited two reasons why this group is special. One, they do a good job of getting better, week to week, and two, they have big hearts. "All 32 of them play with tremendous desire and effort," he said.
