100 Years Ago -- August 22, 1903

ITEMS -- Rev. F.E. Gordon of Sheldon, who was here Saturday says the Barton & Vernon Oil Company's drill is now down over six hundred feet and still at work. County School Commissioner Veerkamp assisted by Prof. Shumate, are holding teacher's examinations for certificates at the Central School Building. G.H. Munn was the lucky man to whom was awarded the watch given by the Talbot Drug Store. He guessed 33 hours and 33 minutes. The watch kept going for 33 hours, 49 minutes and 5 seconds. George C. Baldwin has just purchased from the Lippincotts, a large double onyx soda fountain to be placed in his handsome newly fitted drug store for the season 1904. This magnificent fountain is almost nine feet long and it will require almost three months for the workers to construct it.

75 Years Ago -- August 22, 1928 COUNTY AGENT NOTES -- The next car of dairy cattle to be purchased for Vernon County farmers by the Agricultural Credit Corporation is about complete and all who wish to receive animals in this car should see the secretary at the Chamber of Commerce building soon. 50 Years Ago -- August 22, 1953

Monday will see two big tents go up on the county parking lot in Nevada for the Vernon County Youth Fair that will be held Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 26 and 27. The tents, measuring 50 by 150 feet and 42 by 150, will be brought here Sunday evening from Grandview, Mo. An employee of the company that furnishes similar tents for such affairs will supervise the raising of the canvas but local volunteers are needed to assist with the job. The larger tent, which will be pitched at the west side of the county lot, will house beef, swine, field crops and vegetable exhibits. The smaller tent, on the east side of the lot, will be used for dairy, sheep and poultry exhibits. Bedding for the livestock will be provided by the Fair organization. PEOPLE AROUND TOWN -- A graduate of the National Radio Institute in Washington, DC, Attie Reading offers expert service in all types of general radio repair work and television. He utilized the latest equipment to find those little things, which caused so much trouble with your radio set. Reading has lived in Nevada for 21 years.
