100 Years Ago- June 5, 1903

AROUND TOWN -- The opening of the Summer Theatre at Lake Park last evening by the Lake Park Stock Company was a most auspicious occasion and was attended by a large and enthusiastic audience. The success of the opening was greater than even Managers Stettmund and Hout had hoped for and they are to be congratulated. This is the first Summer Theatre Nevada has ever had and it is one of the very best in the country and among the many reasons why is that it is managed by two excellent businessmen. The men are thoroughly versed in the theatrical work and who are seeking to please our people. Because the Lake Park Stock Company is composed of artists, every one of them, they are the most clever ladies and gentlemen who are not only excellent performers but who are anxious to make the company work to please people.

An interesting sight in Nevada is the Nevada Hatchery, located at 613 East Cherry Street. The manager, J.M. Skaggs, says he has hatched 27,000 chicks this spring and shipped them far and near, one shipment going to the state of Washington. At last report, the little chicks were getting along nicely and not one died en route.

New homes, additions, garages, chicken houses and remodeling have been going strong in Nevada during the past month. Building permits totaling $45,000 were issued during the month of May, according to Fire Chief Carl Piercall. All but $5,000 of the permits were for new homes. Permission to build a garage was given to Everett Teel, 700 South College and to build a chicken house to O.E. Keithly, 1525 West Cherry. The Mitchell Hotel is in the process of receiving a fresh coat of paint. The First National Bank is having an air conditioning unit installed. The outside of the building is getting a new white paint job. STREET NEWS -- City Manager Thomas B. Herring announced today a four-year Street Program which has as its goal the re- sealing (resurfacing) of all paved streets in Nevada. Sixty blocks, scattered all over town, will be re-sealed this year. Work on twelve blocks already has been completed. Rough work on rather extensive South Spring Street Project has been completed. Mr. Herring reported today the city has straightened Spring Street as it leads to new residential areas southwest of town.
