Through a glass darkly 5/18Sunday, May 18, 2003 According to a recent Associated Press article, Sinead O'Connor is planning to retire from music and teach religion to children. I'm not making this up; she actually announced that she wanted to learn how to minister to others. I think I'll check with the weather service and see whether Hades has had a cold snap. This isn't the only strange news going around. It seems Patricia Ireland has been named as the head of the YWCA. For those who aren't up on it YWCA stands for Young Women's Christian Association. Patricia Ireland is the former head of N.O.W., the National Organization of Women. O'Connor is a radical who demands that no flags or other national symbols adorn the venues she sings at. She once ended a song on "Saturday Night Live" by ripping a photo of Pope John Paul II into pieces. This is a woman who wants to teach religion? O'Connor states she doesn't believe in weddings. Christianity sort of expects people to get married; in fact O'Connor is on her second. If O'Connor is talking about teaching religion she ought to rethink that particular position. Considering her past statements and attitudes does she really think that any amount of education will prepare her for teaching religion? It's sort of like asking a drunkard to teach temperance. The most likely outcome would be that the drunkard would train a whole generation of pupils to despise temperance. Considering her past positions it seems that O'Connor isn't aware of James 3:1 which says "Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, for you know that we who teach shall be judged with greater strictness." On the other hand O'Connor may actually have had a change of heart. If that's the case I wish her the best. Whatever the truth of the matter is I would tell the parents of any potential students to heed former president Ronald Reagan's advice: "Trust, but verify." If she's had a change of heart no harm is done, parents can relax. If she hasn't parents can yank their kids from her class faster than she can shred a photo. While there may be some question about O'Connor there is none about Ireland. Ireland is a self-avowed bi-sexual who is married to a man in Florida and has a girlfriend in Washington, D.C. This living arrangement may be all right if you are the head of N.O.W. but not for anyone heading up a Christian organization. Perhaps the question isn't whether Ireland should head the YWCA but whether the YWCA is a Christian organization. If the Y isn't a Christian organization then it doesn't matter who heads it. If it still claims to be a Christian then it does matter; in fact it is of paramount importance. The head of any organization has a huge influence on that organization and Ireland will be no exception. The YWCA will lean ever further to radicalism sand further away from mainstream America under her control. If the YWCA has abandoned any pretense of Christianity perhaps they should consider a name change to conform to national truth in labeling laws. I'd say the YWAA would be a good one: the Young Women's Atheist Association. What is abundantly clear is that the YWCA is no longer worthy of support by people who hold themselves to be Christian. When a group strays so far from its original purpose there comes a time when a reckoning has to take place. For the YWCA the time is now.
