100 Years Ago -- December 21, 1903

OBITUARY -- Andrew Shuhart, an aged Vernon County citizen, who resided six miles southeast of Nevada, died Sunday.

Shuhart was seventy-nine years of age. He came to Vernon County in 1867 and had resided here continuously since. He has lived on his present home place the past twenty-five years and was well known over the county. He was an old Confederate soldier and was in the fifth division on the siege of Vicksburg.

Besides a widow, Mr. Shuhart leaves seven children, only one of whom resided at home. Burial is at Berea Cemetery Tuesday afternoon.

75 Years Ago -- December 21, 1928

KETTERMAN -- Earl Phillips, who is attending business college in Springfield, is home for the Christmas holidays. Phillips had some battling with mud and even had to call for help on his way home. Vernon Potter, Geo. Neff, Sr. and G.C. Phillips are now owners of Everly Farm that sold recently to D.M. Clevenger of Harwood. Mr. and Mrs. David Todd of Nevada have move to our locality. They will occupy their new bungalow erected on the David Arnold homestead. Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Strader attended a family reunion at the home of an uncle, Lem Strader, near Schell City Sunday, in honor of a visiting uncle from Colorado.

50 Years Ago -- December 21, 1953

EAST WASHINGTON -- Mr. and Mrs. A.F. Burgess and family have purchased a new television. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Stiles were called recently to Tulsa, Oklahoma to care for his mother, who is ill. Mrs.

Bessie Sanders of Nevada and Mrs. Dunnerman made a business trip to Kansas City, Monday. Mrs. Jerry Dubray drove to Pittsburg, Kansas, Saturday to do some Christmas shopping.

Mr. and Mrs. A.F. Burgress were unfortunate recently with the loss of three heifers. Mr. and Mrs. Lee Porter entertained with a Christmas party for some of the State Hospital No. 3 employees and their families Thursday evening.

EVE NEWS -- Mr. and Mrs. Rou Seavers left Sunday, December 13 to spend the Christmas holidays with a son, Norman Seavers, who is stationed with the Navy in California. They also plan to meet their new granddaughter, who was born in October. The Rev. Calvin St. Clair of Joplin, minister of the Clayton Christian Church, began a young people's meeting at the church Sunday.

An election of officers was held at that time. Little Patricia Thorn spent Thursday morning with Dorothy and Larry Leonard.
