Late Mustang rally sinks Tigers

Friday, January 9, 2004

Nevada was rolling along with a 29-18 lead when things began to unravel.

McDonald County captured five of the final six matches -- two by forfeit -- to sink the host Tigers 48-35 in a Southwest Conference match on Thursday.

The two forfeits along withthree pins vaulted the undefeated Mustangs, 3-0 in the conference, from an 11-point deficit to victory.

David Hawks, the Tigers 125-pounder, closed out the match with a pin to account for the final Tiger points.

On this night, pins were commonplace. Of the 12 matches contested, 11 were decided by pin falls.

The tide took a critical turn when McDonald County's heavyweight Chad Horton pulled a mild upset with a pin of Nevada's previously unbeaten Leonard Keller.

Horton's win lifted the Mustangs to their first lead of the night at 30-29.

Keller, behind in points at 10-5, suffered a twisted knee at the 1:28 mark of the second period. When the match resumed, Keller, who owned a 4-0 record against Horton, was ineffective.

"I feel like it was the injury that cost me the match," said a disappointed Keller.

Nevada's 145-pounder Zach Walrod remained undefeated, but had to endure four blood timeouts because of a blow to the nose.

"I took a bad shot on the kid and he threw a pretty good crossface (to the nose)," said Walrod. "It was definitely frustrating because it gave him breather time and my whole goal was to wear him down."

The Nevada coaches and trainer were able to control the bleeding within the five-minute time limit and Walrod went on to a second-period technical fall, 16-1, win over his opponent.

Nevada's John Christie (130), Tommy Werner (140), Casey Chambers (160) and Tyler Shouse (189) scored impressive wins by pin over their opponents.

"John (Christie) looked much better tonight than Tuesday and Casey (Chambers) got a real good win for us," said Nevada coach Larron Hurst.

Hurst also singled out sophomore 152-pounder Keith Overton for praise in a losing effort.

Overton took his state-ranked opponent, Eb Scroggins, into the second period, the first time Scroggins had been extended past the opening period this season.

Nevada fell to 2-4 in dual meets.
