His remarks were soon denounced by some who feel that there is always an excuse for the behavior of people who demand to be taken care of by the system but don't want to participate in making it work.
I'm sorry but Bill Cosby hit the nail on the head. It's not about whether the people are black, white or some other ethnicity, it's about personal responsibility.
The Romans knew the kind of people Cosby was talking about. They didn't care what was happening anywhere else, they just cared whether they were being fed and entertained.
Bread and circuses, that's the phrase that resonated with them. As long as they had full bellies and there were games in the Coliseum, then why should they do anything but eat and watch?
All groups have people like them, I don't care where you are or what color your skin is there is someone in your group who just wants to sit on their butt and collect other peoples' money.
It is easier to complain about someone else having more money than you than to go out and do the work necessary to earn more money. Sure there is always someone around who has an easier time making money but that doesn't excuse anyone else for not working to make theirs.
I've been around rich people and poor people and I've noticed that people who have money have generally earned it. I don't know too many people who have money that was just handed to them. I do know poor people who complain about how hard life is but seem to spend all their time drinking beer, playing cards and shooting pool instead of going out and trying to earn more money.
Rich people have taken a lot of hits about how greedy they are, and I'm sure some of it is justified, but rich people also contribute a lot to this country. The top 5 percent of income earners make about 15 percent of the income in this country but they also pay about 30 percent of the taxes.
What a lot of people don't figure is the migration of people from tax bracket to tax bracket over their life-spans. A lot of people start out barely making enough money to file a tax return and over time, with experience and education, are able to creep up the brackets making more money the longer they work.
Some people don't do that. They start out making minimum wage and because they don't put in any extra effort they stay at minimum wage or just above it all their lives. This isn't to say that someone who works hard and tries to better themselves will never have set-backs and find themselves hard up for money, but those people will generally have the pluck and gumption to pick themselves up and work their way out of the hole they temporarily find themselves in.
This country has a lot to offer people but to take full advantage of it you need to put in work, and generally speaking, the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. On the other hand, sit on your butt all day, drink beer and don't put yourself out any. See how far you get.
