John Shomin of Liberal will represent Missouri next month as an alternate to the Republican National Convention in New York City where George W. Bush will be nominated to a second term as President.

A total of 57 delegates and 54 alternates from Missouri will attend the National Convention Aug. 30 through Sept. 2. The delegates were selected during the Missouri Republican Party state convention in June and at the Congressional District conventions held in April.

"John is a crucial ingredient to our strong grassroots team that will help re-elect President Bush this November," Ann Wagner, chairman of the Missouri Republican Party said. "We are delighted to have John serving as a GOP leader in New York."

Shomin was born in Kansas City some 61 years ago. He spent 50 years of his life as a resident of Kansas. He retired from Ford Motor Company after 30 years of service and returned to Missouri.

Shomin has been married for 33 years to the former Linda Essex, who grew up in Liberal. He loves the area and the people of this area, thus the decision to retire here.

Shomin has been active in Republican politics for the last several elections and has helped to elect Republican candidates into office. His hobbies include railroading and flight instructing.

"It is a real honor for me to be able to represent the Republican Party in New York City and I am looking forward to representing my fellow Missouri Republicans as we re-nominate our wonderful president," Shomin said.
