Retriever club active in southwest Missouri

Retriever clubs aren't just for duck hunters, said Loel Wilson, Nevada.

Wilson is a member of Southwest Missouri Retriever Club, the organization coordinating retriever demonstrations for the Four Rivers Sportsman's RecFest, Sept. 25-26, at Four Rivers Conservation Area.

"We regularly have hunt tests," Wilson said, which are scored on a pass-fail basis and give dog owners a chance to showcase their animals' skills, according to American Kennel Club or Hunting Retriever Club of America rules.

Retriever clubs are helpful to owners, especially when behavior problems surface, or when owners are ready to take their dog to the next level in terms of training. Opportunities exist for those interested in the hunt tests, in practical aspects of hunting, or both.

"We get together and exchange ideas on retriever training and hold two registered hunt tests. Some dog owners aren't hunters at all. Some just do the hunt tests and things like that," Wilson said.

Others, such as himself, are more interested in hunting.

Nevertheless, attending the training days and other events are worthwhile to both dog an owner. "I got into it for the socialization. It socializes the dogs. The more they become used to other dogs and other people, the calmer they are. Calmness is a must for a good retriever."

The Southwest Missouri Retriever Club has many active members, and sponsors many activities. Similar events have been conducted in other areas by the club, although Wilson admits next weekend's demonstration will be a first for him.

In addition to the RecFest events, the retriever club is sponsoring an AKC hunt test Oct. 9 and 10, at Talbot Conservation Area.

New members are always welcome. "Anyone who's interested is welcome," Wilson said.
