Habitat project deserves community support

Dear editor,

I am writing to raise community awareness about an upcoming project in which we could all play a part. Nevada is soon to be the site of a Habitat for Humanity "Blitz Build."

As background, the Nevada Area Habitat for Humanity has been around for a number of years and has already completed seven houses in our area. This group quietly raises money through their monthly baked potato luncheons and a few other promotions to fund the building of new homes for deserving families. The previous homes have been built with a core group of dedicated individuals volunteering hundreds of hours each and the process has taken months each time.

For the newest project, The Habitat Board of Directors were encouraged to try a new-for-Nevada approach to the building process. The goal of the "Blitz Build" is to complete the newest home in just 10 days! The schedule for this construction requires many, many man (and woman) hours in a short amount of time. Some jobs need skilled labor, but many of the tasks could be completed by anyone -- such as loading, unloading, painting, sanding, being a go-fer, cleaning up or helping with drinks and meals for the crews.

People interested in being involved could use a day off, a vacation day or even hours after work to be a part of this unique project. Whether you could volunteer for just a couple of hours on one day or to work for the whole week, they need you! Another crucial way that people can get involved is to make a donation to the "Blitz Build."

Due to the very short time frame for the construction, significant advance funding is needed. Every dollar will make a difference and will be greatly appreciated.

If you cannot help physically, please consider making a contribution. Donations to Habitat for Humanity are tax deductible.

The dates for construction are: Saturday, Sept. 25, through Sunday, Oct. 3. For more information on how to volunteer or how to make a contribution contact Bob Beaver, president of Nevada Area Affiliate of Habitat for Humanity at (417) 667-3042 or Rev. Ralph Clark, volunteer coordinator at (417) 667-5435. Information is also available at this Web site: www.umcn.info /habitat/.

The "Blitz Build" is a major undertaking that needs community involvement! Civic groups, churches, service clubs and youth organizations, as well as individuals, have the opportunity to get involved in many ways. Imagine the pride we would have as a community if we could all say "WE helped make this happen!"

Other than eating a baked potato every month, I am not involved with Habitat for Humanity but I see the "Blitz Build" as a very worthwhile, short term project that needs lots of support. We have a caring community.

Let's all get involved in some way and show what Nevada can accomplish when we work together!
