Mike Dines, of Appleton City, adds his personal dog tags to the "soldier's cross." The upturned rifle with the helmet, along with the dog tags and a pair of boots, which Dines added later, represents the graves of fallen comrades-in-arms. Members of the Don E. Pollock Chapter 918 of the Vietnam Veterans of America participated in the "last patrol," an event that is symbolic of the soldiers comming home to the beacons in the windows of loved ones. The activities, held in Marmaduke Park Saturday, were part of the POW/MIA Watch Fire -- an event intended to raise public awareness of unaccounted for soldiers from conflicts past and present. Many area veterans and their families were expected to attend the event.
