Tuesday fire damages mobile home

Tuesday, October 26, 2004

Compton Junction and Walker firefighters responded to a morning blaze south of Compton Junction this morning. A trailer home owned by Jerri Jones caught fire sometime before 7:45 a.m. "Shelly, the bus driver, was pounding on my front door," said Jones, who lives in an adjacent trailer. Jones called emergency responders and both the Walker and Compton Junction Fire Departments came to the scene. Amanda Lowe, Jones' daughter, said her father attempted to fight the fire himself for a short time, "My dad was standing out there with his little garden hose." No flames could be seen on the exterior of the house but a large amount of smoke was pouring out through the roofline of the house. Firefighters broke out windows and eventually entered the building to extinguish the fire inside the home. The mobile home was one of three owned by Jones on the property, "I rent the two out to pay my mortgage," said Jones. She said the building was currently unoccupied. According to Lowe, the trailer had recently had new carpeting and flooring installed, and her mother's vaccum cleaner was also in the home.
