Election Reflections

One of the most important responsibilities we have as citizens of this great state and country is our participation in the election process. I want to thank each and every one of you who chose to participate in the Nov. 2 election. It has been 30 years since this nation has seen this level of participation.

"Truly historic" are words frequently used to help describe voter turnout. I am so pleased with the residents of Missouri and the 28th Senate District as I have reviewed the election returns. My optimism was restored and my faith in the citizens of this country renewed. Your participation truly matters.

Our faith and freedom remained two of the most often-cited reasons for going to the polls. Rural Missouri and rural America made a statement in this election and I want you to remember the power of your voice. You chose not to be silent and our government benefited.

So how should you channel your energy now? Let me make a couple of suggestions: In President Bush's acceptance speech he shared a favorite quote of mine from Phillips Brooks "Do not pray for easy lives, pray to be stronger men! Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers, pray for powers equal to your tasks." This requires focused effort on your part and mine but it is a great prayer as it puts our challenges in proper perspective. In addition, we all share a part in our future responsibility.

As our elected leaders of this wonderful state and nation seek to fulfill the obligations of their office, don't forget to stay informed, engaged and in prayer for all those in authority.

We welcome your letters, e-mails, and phone calls and covet your prayers for discernment.

Hearing from our constituents will always be encouraged.
