Reasons to Give Thanks in 2004

Friday, November 19, 2004
Thanksgiving and the December holiday season are busy times, full of family gatherings, festive parties, and joyous celebrations. But it is also a time to reflect and take stock of the countless blessings that enrich our lives. Although I am grateful for more things than I could possibly list in a column, I'd like to share a few of my reasons for giving thanks this year.

We give thanks for the good fortune of living in a land of plenty. Unlike those in some countries around the world, most Americans have a safe place to live, enough food to eat, and are able to provide for their families. We strive to create the conditions in which all people have the opportunity to be so fortunate.

We give thanks for this year's abundant harvest. We give thanks for America's farmers and food industry workers, whose work in the fields and in processing plants and markets allows us to put food on the table on Thanksgiving and every day throughout the year.

We give thanks for our families, friends, and neighbors, both near and far. We look forward to the opportunity to enjoy their company. Whether in person or through holiday greetings, letters, and calls, they are always with us in our thoughts and give us strength when times are good and when times are difficult.

We give thanks to the men and women who are serving in our armed forces, at home and abroad. Our special gratitude goes to military families for their many sacrifices. We can never repay them for their willingness to share their sons and daughters, husbands and wives, and fathers and mothers, with their fellow citizens in order to serve our country and protect our freedoms.

We give thanks for those who work in hospitals and nursing homes, as well as for police, fire, and emergency first responder personnel whose service may force them to delay or to miss Thanksgiving and holiday celebrations with their own families. We are grateful that the devotion and care they give to our loved ones never takes a holiday.

We give thanks for our country and the blessings we enjoy because America is our home. We give thanks for the vision of our founding fathers, who established a nation and government institutions based on the principles of freedom and democracy. We thank our forefathers for passing on this rich legacy to us, and pledge to preserve those ideals for all future generations.

We give thanks for the strength and determination that is required to deal with the challenges we face, but we also give thanks for the belief in the bright future that lies ahead of us.

The American spirit of optimism will always keep us working to make things better for our children and our grandchildren. We pray for the wisdom to recognize and appreciate all of these gifts.
