Three Nevada wrestlers won their weight class and two more finished second as the Tigers finished second as a team at the Pleasant Hill tournament Saturday.
Seniors David Hawks, John Christie and Tyler Shouse each won their weight classes, while junior Joe Roberts and freshman Spenser Daniels both got second.
Hawks won the 140-pound class, going 5-0 with five pins. The impressive performance helped Hawks to win the Saber-tooth Tiger of the Week award.
Christie and Shouse also each went 5-0, both of them won four matches by pin.
Roberts was 4-1, getting all four of his victories by pin.
Daniels also was 4-1, collecting two pins despite being an unseeded wrestler.
"This was the perfect tournament to start the year off," Nevada coach Larron Hurst said. "We had nine of 14 wrestlers that never wrestled a varsity match coming into the year."
Hurst said the upper-classmen on the team truly led the Tigers to the second-place finish.
"Our veteran wrestlers provided examples for our younger kids to feed off of and react in a positive way," Hurst said.
Nevada will have their first home match of the season Thursday when Kansas schools Fort Scott and Paola visit. The match will start at 5 p.m.
