The 2005 Sesquicentennial Celebration will be held in conjunction with Bushwhacker Days from Wednesday, June 15, 2005 through Saturday, June 18 -- marking Vernon County's 150th anniversary.

The Bushwhacker steering committee met Thursday, Jan. 27, and would like to see this year's celebration turned into an even more festive and historical event than ever, said Nevada/Vernon County Area Chamber of Commerce Director Kathi Wysong.

However, due to the loss of several board members this past year, new committee members are needed to help make this possible.

In addition, the committee is looking for a former Bushwhacker Queen or interested citizen who could help coordinate a float for all former Bushwhacker Days royalty candidates.

The committee is also looking for local wagon masters to provide historically-themed transportation for the public from the Nevada Square to Marmaduke Park, where additional historic activities are being planned.

Other new events

The special heritage celebration will include the unique design of a Nevada and Vernon County flag, a commemorative mural that is scheduled to be dedicated during the event, and of course, release of the long awaited two-volume set of Vernon County's history books.

Wysong said that anyone wishing to be a part of this "once-in-a-lifetime event," or who can assist with one of these projects, may contact her at (417) 667-5300 or Bushwhacker Chairperson Mike Ast at (417) 448-9476.

The next scheduled planning session for the 150th celebration will be Thursday, Feb. 24. at 5:15 p.m.
