Local author's book places second at 2005 Missouri Writer's Guild Conference

Carolyn Gray Thornton, columnist and writer for the senior page of The Nevada Daily Mail received a second place award for her latest book, "Whither Thou Goest? You've Got to be Kidding!" from the Missouri Writer's Guild.

The annual convention of the professional writers association met April 29 and 30.

The program included talks by editors and publishers on what they are looking for in a manuscript.

There is also an opportunity to have a personal interview with the editors to talk about or show your own work.

The highlight of the conference is the awards banquet, held on the last night. Fifty-nine people entered works in the contest, with a total of 290 entries in 24 categories.

Thornton's book was entered in the Best Non-fiction Book category, where it received second place.

She also got an honorable mention for her columnm "A Special Sister," in the Best Religious or Inspirational Article category which was one of the weekly columns in her "Middle Age Plus" columns in the Nevada Daily Mail.

Ellen Gray Massey, a native Vernon Countian and sister to Thornton, received a second place award for "Mysteries of the Ozarks," an anthology she edited of 19 short stories written by authors with strong Ozark ties.

She also received an honorable mention for the best travel article which appeared in the Ozark Mountaineer.
