Deadline for those who want to appeal property tax slated for June 10

The deadline is fast approaching for those who have been affected by changes in the value of their real estate and personal property taxes to appeal to the board of equalization. According to Vernon County Clerk Tammi Beach Friday, June 10 is the last day appeals can be filed.

Vernon County Assessor Cherie Roberts said reappraisals were done using data from different sources. "We take into consideration the county cost index, we look at depreciation tables and land value tables and sales data over the past two years to come up with the amount of increase. This year I went with 5 percent. The state wanted 10 percent but I didn't want to get strung up on the tree outside the courthouse, as it is I'm nearly halfway there," Roberts joked.

According to Roberts the appeal to the board, composed of the three county commissioners and Roberts, is the second step in a process that could lead to the State Tax Commission or Circuit Court. "During a reappraisal year we send out impact notices to those whose values have changed," Roberts said. "The first step is for them to call us for an informal meeting, that needed to be done by May 13. We had about 220 people call us and about half of them had reductions after our talks."

The second step is a meeting with the county board of equalization and that is the deadline coming up. So far eight people have contacted Beach for an appeal. Anyone who has already talked to Roberts and is dissatisfied with the result can appeal to the board by contacting the clerks office for the forms needed for an appeal. "Property owners appearing before the board should be prepared to present evidence to establish what they believe to be the correct value of their property," Beach said. "If, after a decision of the board, the property owner is still dissatisfied with the assessment, the appeal may be lodged with the State Tax Commission and thereafter to the Circuit Court."
