'Tech-ing it to the Limit'

Wednesday, June 22, 2005

Students at Nevada Middle School got a chance Monday to get some hands-on experience in designing and building cardboard boats that they then tested -- by floating them in Walton Pool as two of the team members paddled them in a race. Winners of the speed race were Tyler Judah, Martin Sandoval and Derek Richards. After the speed race students settled in for a test of endurance to see which boats would last the longest before succumbing to the inevitable waterlogging of the cardboard. At least five of the boats lasted an incredible hour before sinking and two of those, the SS Azul and the Unsinkable Silver Angel, lasted an amazing two hours before the contest was ruled a tie because the students had to get back to the middle school to go home. The SS Azul was designed and built by Rachel Kennedy, Malea Galimberto, Erica Magsam and Clint Scotten. The Unsinkable Silver Angel was designed and built by Kristal Miller, Whitney Pryor and Amber Ladwig. The project is part of the middle school's "Tech-ing it to the Limit" Summer School program.
