The Nevada Lady Tigers got their basketball season off to a winning start by soundly beating the Stockton Tigers 68-29 in the varsity contest.

The large crowd had a chance to see how head coach Brent Bartlett plans to take advantage of the depth he has on the bench this year to keep the pressure on the opponent.

"Everyone here saw how we plan to rotate players in and out and wear our opponent out," Bartlett said.

All 10 players on the squat had time on the floor and everyone contributed to the final score with junior guard Afton Baldwin leading the team with 22 points followed by fellow junior Amanda Wilson with 10 including two treys and sophomore Lindsey Rice with 8 points.

Nevada set the tone of the game from the start, scoring 17 unanswered points before Stockton got on the board and ended the first quarter leading 25-2 and continued to extend the lead throughout the night ending with a 37 point lead at the final buzzer, despite slowing the game down in the final minutes.

Last year, with a more seasoned team Nevada beat a very young Stockton team with a score of 67-40.

"I'm very pleased with our defense," Bartlett said.

It set the tempo for us and created a lot of easy buckets early in the game, he said.

"They did a good job of knocking down shots," Bartlett said.

The break during the Thanksgiving holidays will give Bartlett a little time to get ready to take on a much tougher Joplin team in a Dec. 1 home game and for possibly for a second time one week later during the Joplin Tournament.

"We'll have to be ready for Joplin's aggressive style of defense," he said.

They are a veteran team, he said.

"We're not where I want us to be offensively," Bartlett said, adding that they will be working on that during the next week.

Earlier in the evening the Nevada JV, which is coached by Jennie Allard, started their season by beating the Stockton JV, 49-17.
