Removing Obstacles from Education

Friday, March 3, 2006

Nothing should stand in the way of the education of our children. Yet, several things do. Throughout the state, there are teacher shortages in areas as basic as math and science and as diverse as marketing and vocal music. Students in many rural districts don't have the resources, the teachers, or enough interest to provide Advanced Placement courses for exceptional students. What's worse, some rural districts struggle to offer the basics that some colleges require for admission, like foreign languages. There are certainly more obstacles, but there's also hope on the horizon. House Bill 1275 has been moving through the legislative process and offers tremendous promise to children and parents throughout the state. HB 1275 would require the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to establish the Missouri Virtual Public School by July 2007. The promised rewards of the MVP School lie in the program's use of computer technology. Students from any part of the state could enroll in the MVP School to access basic and advanced coursework. Certified Missouri teachers would teach the online courses, and students could enroll in one, two, three, or even all of their courses through the MVP School. Students could use public school computers or their own to take the course. It also might be possible that they could receive the necessary hardware and software after enrolling without cost.
