Petition to place issue on election ballot
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Petitions aimed at preventing complete racial integration in Arkansas schools -- bearing the approval of Gov. Orval Faubus -- will be circulated by the governor's five man committee which recently studied interposition.
The petition will seek to place two proposed initiated acts on the November general election ballot. One of the proposals will concern interposition, the other a pupil assignment plan.
"If the need arises," the governor said, "I will call a special session of the Legislature before the September school term."
The governor made his announcement after a two hour meeting with four members of his interposition committee. The meeting followed the disclosure yesterday that east Arkansas legislators are going to ask for a special session of the Legislature to consider the pupil assignment plan.
