Rural fire departments to conduct fund-raising events

Friday, March 24, 2006

Representatives of Vernon County's rural fire departments need funds badly, in the aftermath of their collective response to more than 100 fires in January, February and March, so these annual fund-raising, and additional ones in the works for some of the departments, are more important than ever. Many departments have responded to more fires during this time than they usually face in an entire year.

"We're really drained," said a representative of Walker Rural Fire Department on Thursday. The department's annual hog roast is tomorrow, beginning at 5 p.m., at the Walker rural fire barn on C Highway, Walker. A donation box will be available. "Please give what you can and help the fire department raise funds, as the recent grass fires have depleted our funds," an event organizer said.

The meal will consist of pork, turkey, potatoes, cabbage, baked beans, vegetable, dessert and tea or lemonade. Membership dues may also be paid at the event, or mailed to PO Box 72, Walker, MO 64790.

On April 1, the Milo Rural Fire Department will conduct a dinner at its fire barn, located five miles south of Nevada on U.S. Highway 71. Turkey, pork, hot dogs and more will be served. Annual dues for this department may be paid at the event.
