Vesuvius furious
NAPLES -- After a few hours of hope yesterday the inhabitants of this district saw the prospect of relief vanish when the fall of sand and ashes emitted from Mount Vesuvius began again more furiously than Monday. The high wind drives the ashes like falling snow. Even with the sun shining high in the heavens the light was a dim yellow in the midst of which the few persons who remained in the sticken town, their clothing, hair and beards covered with ashes, moved about in the stillness of desolation like ghosts.
The case of Torre del Greco is typical. For 30 hours the place has been practically deserted, but amid the ruins and semi-darkness illuminated from time to time by vivid flashes of lightning, a few of the inhabitants go about hungry and with throats parched with smoke and dirt.
